I-40 through Knoxville is wide open and running smoothly.

Check this web site for current traffic conditions in Tennessee:

I would suggest going through the city on I-40 on a weekend. It's faster and there'll be no traffic clogging downtown.

There are also big message boards over I-40 just before you get to the 640 turnoff that usually tell you driving times for 640 vs. I-40 and update on any accidents or problems on either.

140 is the parkway. It's just a spur off 40 at the moment.

(Though, someone correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't 140 going to eventually be the termination point for a new interstate from Augusta to Knoxville, through Atlanta or Greenville or something? I think that project is pretty much dead in the water.)

The current plans are to extend 140 south towards Walland, TN, intersecting 321.

Going back 3-4 years ago their was some flap about a corridor east coast - north west... If I remember correctly Charleston ~ Chicago ~ Windsor... the flap was going threw the Appalachian Mountains / Smokies... it was going to be 4-6 lanes both direction when completed... I hope no one is that foolish to allow something like that to happen.... "ever" !
