Waldbaums stinks! Old decrepit, dirty supermarkets that have been around since the year of the flood, that's all you got back in New Yawk! The ones that are still in business, anyways, LOL

Get out in Las Vegas a little more next time you visit here and see the difference instead of making broad generalizations based on one small supermarket you visited. And please do remember, NOTHING you got in horrible New Yawk can compare to what we got here in Las Vegas. That's why so many of you moved here, lol.

Please don't jump on me or get defensive. I wasn't making any generalized statements. But thanks for the heads up about that Albertson's. I have been to other places in Las Vegas. I guess my friend took me there because it was the closest supermarket to their house and they use it frequently. I agree with you about your other statements regarding Long Island and yes, Waldbaum's has declined greatly since being taken over by A&P. But there are other large supermarkets in the boroughs and Long Island that do have what you described including a bank and HUGE kosher food sections (including bakery and fresh meat) and fish mongers (with separate kosher area) behind counters that make special orders for you. I've taken some behind the scenes tours with schoolchildren and was pleased with the cleanliness of the stores we got to visit. I wouldn't say they are better than the supermarkets in LV, but on a par. We also have superstore versions that sell toys, have a book department, housewares, large drug store and this is not a Walmart or Target but a supermarket chain. They are large and modern with the latest check out gadetry including those "zapper scanners you can walk around the store with." We also have more supermarket chains as well as independently owned franchises (Key Food, Associated, C Town, Foodtown) and there is still a greater selection and variety of items. And of course New York still has small independently owned bakeries, butchers, and fish stores. Many on Long Island have large parking lots. What we don't have is a super Walmart or Target that sells fresh food as they do in other states. However, the quality or lack of quality of supermarkets would hardly keep me in New York.

Well thank you for your explanation, your initial post sounded kind of troll-like. And that's why some of us came back with a retort. As a long time ago New Yawker and a frequent visitor to see family still in prison back there, there really is no comparison to whatever is in NY as to what we enjoy here in LV.

I see from your posting history you want to head to Nashville. Visited there a few years ago, Opryland, the amusement park, Franklin, Hendersonville, etc. We have friends who live in Franklin (who moved there from Rosedale, Queens many, many years ago) and they love it there.

Good luck with that and I hope you get to realize your relocation dream soon. You'll find things in the Tennessee area so much nicer than NY, and the people that dwell down there, do in fact, live and believe in Southern hospitality.

Much good luck!

As everywhere, it depends which ones (and what markets they server). I have a car, and do most of my shopping on LI. The supermarkes vary from okay to very good, and the prices from good to absurd.

From the few times I stuck my head into LV area supermarkets. They seemed pretty good, again depending on area.

Oh, and Walbaums isn't what you remember. There's one near my mother's house that's an absolute palace.

Oh and yeah, it probably IS considered a palace considering it's in NY and in comparison to what you got there, there's one near my sis's house on LI, redone and cleaned up, finally in line with what we mostly have here in Las Vegas.

And anyways, who cares what is in NY and what isn't? Talk like that is depressing!

This is Vegas baby--- and that's why the NY'ers flock here, lol.

Accurate and sound advice, Buzz. I've visited NYC a few times, and lived there one summer as a boy. I love NYC. Lifestyle here is very different. Many neighborhoods have grocery stores and chain restaurants you can easily walk to, but you will drive to get to most of your destinations. Even the air is different here. NYC air has a unique scent, maybe it's the melting pot aura smell, or maybe it's just the garbage. One thing for sure you will appreciate, is that you wont greatly miss the variety you are accustomed to there. Las Vegas is the town that truly never sleeps. i've often done grocery shopping after midnight. Best of luck.
