reduced to its simplest form, it means that you are allowed to hold a job without being forced to join the union. PERIOD.
Question then, why was I required to join the union when I took the job at the casino? They flat-out told me they would only hire me if I joined. Not that I mind -- I get more in benefits than I pay in dues. But still...

Thats an individual hotel policy.....you could complain.....but then they wouldnt hire you....it's a case of....if they can get away with it they will....because they're afraid of the Union.

and I agree....the union Benefits make it worthwhile....but the fact remains that "IF you went thru legal channels" you would not have to join the Union....but is it worth it.......tilting at windmills so to speak

at least that is MY understanding of it all.....

You where lied too or mis- informed. Even if you not a member of the union. You are still covered under the bargaining agreement for the benefits and payscale structure.

Just go down to payroll and stop union due check deductions. A month later you will get a letter from the union that you are behind on the dues. Call them and tell them nope I quit membership. That will be end of it besides some letters in the future from the union wanting you back for membership. Your benefits package will be still intact. The Hotel/Casino pays for these benefits. Not the union. They are both co-managed by the union and the hotel.

If you want to discuss the union issues, that's for another thread. Looks like the OP's situation is resolved, unless the employer appeals. To the OP-- assuming the employer doesn't appeal and you remain eligible, be sure to follow all the rules that apply to you while receiving benefits to the letter.

Just as a warning: if you plan to leave Las Vegas, and if you are not looking for work in the meantime, you could end up paying back whatever you collected. Also, if you do move to another city you will want to report in to their unemployment office right away and have your claim transferred. Transfer is the word that we used in UI, but it really stays with the state where you filed. It's just that you must be registered for work where ever you land. Eligibility requires a WEEKLY JOB SEARCH, of at least three employers a week.

I knew I couldn't stay out of it completely.
