I bought a condo and now my biggest expense when I visit is car rental.
So I recently bought a extra car and plan to bring it to Vegas to leave at
my Condo to use when I visit. I got my part year resident ID last trip. I see
you are suppose to register a car within 30 days but everything I can find
online looks like you must be a resident to register a car. I know other people
must have vehicle they leave at there properties. Any advice on how this
works in Nevada. Thanks in advance.

I am not sure on the Vegas reg and ins as our condo is not done yet so not tried to get it down there.

If your Canadian,,,, I have a car down there in storage I use and some Canadian insurance companies want to charge a 50% surcharge if you keep a car down there or have it for over 60 days.

Just thought I would mention that in case you are Canadian.

Maybe someone will answer your question and I would like to hear what they say too.

and the law in Nevada explicitly states that the insurance must be on NEVADA paper.

I think I heard that something like 25% or what ever it is are people that have no insurance in Nevada??? Is it allowed for people to drive on no insurance. Or the cheap $20 a month ins companies I see billboards for or commercials on radio stations.

I am an auto broker storing high end cars to import back to Canada so I am mainly concerned on having the proper coverage to store the cars down there, not to drive them.

I had a car that I drove in Los Angeles a few years back and learned about the 50% surcharge.

It is something we will have to look into once we have a second home down there and think about having car(s) to keep there and drive. I'd rather have Nevada insurance... everything is more expensive up here in Canada.

Rental car charges are the largest thing we pay as well when we go down. Anyone know what it would cost for insurance and can you get it if you are Canadian?
At what point would it make sense to purchase a car in LV and leave it there.

cars are mostly cheaper to buy down there. You could buy a car, drive it for a year, drive it back to Canada and sell it and maybe break even.

Last time I got a convertible for $130 for 6 days...... extra fees on top..... that was a decent price but seen them way more expensive at times. I lucked out.

Never priced out insurance there but it must be decently priced too.

I am a expert in this, (I just went thru it) what you do is get insurance for nevada with your current insurance company (it will cost you LESS then your paying now in your home state)

ONCE YOU DO THIS YOU HAVE 30 DAYS TO SWITCH THE REGISTRATION TO NEVADA
(the reason for the caps, is that once you dont have insurance on the car with your 'home' state, the DMV requires you to surrender your plates to them in 30 days, and then you are driving in NV without plates)

you need to bring your car to the Nevada DMV with a Smog Inspection, there you use your SEASONAL ID to register the car in Nevada (do NOT surrender your 'Home' License) you will need to get a VIN check at the Nevada DMV, and you will also be surrendering your 'home' Title on the car.. The Nevada DMV will then re-title the car for nevada, give you plates, and take your $230

@macgeek
I'm not sure how that works with being a Canadain. I would prefer to purchase and insure the car in LV as they are less expensive than up here. I'm not sure what the cost is for insurance compared to renting everytime. Last time we had a Kia full size from ALamo for 249. all in for 9 days but now looking to book next Dec. for 12 days they want 760.
