The reason for resort fees is that they work.

The online booking companies don't list the resort fees, so whoever has the cheapest hotel room gets the reservation. Whoever gets the reservation gets the guests in their casino the bulk of the time.

It was dumb of Caesar's not to be on the bandwagon. The average tourist kvetches about cramped conditions in airplanes but doesn't know a thing about seat pitch -- and won't pay more for a ticket that features a more-comfortable flight. This same average tourist kvetches about resort fees, BUT PAYS THEM.

Caesar's probably hoped to build some loyalty and repeat business. But the bulk of the tourists simply went with the lowest-priced option that gave them the hotel features they wanted next time they booked a room.

At the end of the day, we're talking about gambling tourists -- they've already shown they're not very good with numbers based on their destination. What's fifty bucks in "resort fees" to people like that?

Too much in debt and instead of unloading properties they are taking in more debt and wanting their guests to pay for it.

The $25.00 a day resort fee is chump change when you consider the price of a drink in a nice lounge.

When in Rome do as the Romans do (pun intended) One other thing to take in consideration is Nevada has passed online gambling and in the near future other states will or the Federal Gov will pass it. This means less people occupying hotels rooms so resort fees help make up the loss. Sure more people may gamble on line but the $$$ spent for room food and etc has risen up to new highs in the past few years. I do agree most people who stay at Caesars have the $$$ but they will migrate to a better price hotel on the strip. Lets just hope Las Vegas is not going to price themselves out of the market.

While you think tourists don't pay attention to resort fees and just go with the lowest priced room, here is a fact. I have been to Vegas many times, and the past four years was responsible for bringing a group there. Not a big group, we probably weren't a drop in the bucket. However, I decided on hotels, etc. When deciding a room, I would email them and ask about the taxes and any resort or maintenance fees (some of these daily fees are disguised under another name), and then take the total price per day per room as the consideration. While some in Vegas charge no resort fees - I find them to like to nickel and dime people to death (something that bugs me). Others charge a minimal fee but offer free pool use, possibly free wifi, and other perks.
I know it doesn't matter - but we will not be back to Vegas. We are planning on going somewhere else this summer and the following years. Part of this is due to the gimme mentality in Vegas. Vegas has changed over the years - started going there uhm, 20 or more years ago. Went through a phase where I didn't want to go there anymore, then recently started going back. Everyone has their hand out, everyone wants to charge for everything. And it isn't the same. I realize this is Vegas' choice, and it is also my choice whether we go back there or not. Granted the hotels in Vegas, at casinos both on and off the strip - the low end rooms are better than most motel rooms you can find while traveling. But if ya'all really really want to bounce back from this economic thing you need to pay attention to what people are telling you. I have friends that live in Vegas and Pahrump, I'm not a strip only visitor. But I won't be back. Good luck. I'm on your side truly, but when greed takes over......look out.

Now is a great time for other resorts not charging "Resort Fee" especially Downtown Vegas hotels to make a marketing move. Spring Break and Summer coming up!

then why, pray tell, is downtown usually at peak occupancy and peak rates?

Most downtown hotels do NOT have a resort fee [with the exception of the GN I believe] and [at least] in MY old hotel it was a decision made at our weekly forecast meeting because we didnt like the idea of false advertising.

The convention business is also a reason the hotels get away with charging what they do. 40 million people come here each year I wonder what that number would be if the Convention business tanked
You have to compare rates also on what other cities charge for room rates and they are usually more $$ to stay in NYC or LA or Boston and etc. So having a business convention and etc here in LV is not as expensive to some other groups and they keep the strip hotels making money. To the average person it hurts them in the pocket book. The pools are not open year around and then it does cost $$$ to party at them. I believe soon Downtown will take a bite out of the strip especially when I am down there and I keep hearing many folks say Fremont ST is more fun and cheaper and the $$$ they save staying there. if they want to go to the strip they have figured out how to use the bus or they take the $$ they saved and hop a cab. Transportation cost to and from LV is the main negative factor on people visiting here. The last thing people want to hear when they get here is another $$charge for something like resort fees after the airlines have just stuck it to them. Please keep in mind all of the mentioned above are run by corporations and the bottom line is $$$ they will only change if that is affected until then live with it we Have no choice
