I have a small dog and 2 cats.
Finding that many pet friendly apartment complexes only allow 2 pets maximum.
I'm sure there are a couple of different ways around that but I'm curious if anyone here knows from experience of any apartments in the valley that has allowed or does allow 3 pets?

Are you willing to pay an additional non refundable pet fee on top of the standard pet deposit? If so, many apartments will accommodate your pet needs.

Consider renting a house - Landlords are usually more flexible!

Here's hoping. We have 2 dogs under 10 lbs and I'm seeing $500 per pet in deposit in many of the houses... plus cleaning, plus key, plus security, plus, plus, plus.. the $1400/mo first month's rent turns in to $4000+ move-in pretty quickly..

Yep as Von949 said, that's about right 1st month's rent, $400 per pet - then security. Problem is many people do not watch/care for their pets, then carpet damage is done to extent it needs to be replaced. That's why so many rentals have tile floors...then there's the damage to backyard. I believe everyone should have opportunity to have pets, but they do need to pay deposits to cover the landlord.

As a landlord, the majority of damage I've had to deal with has been from pets.

My wife, prior to us getting married, had the same issue with finding an apt that allowed more than two pets. Even paying the pet deposit (really a fee, since it's non-refundable), I guess most of the places are two pets max.

You should be able to find a house or condo rental from a private party allowing you to have three pets. As the other posters said, just be prepared to pay non-refundable upfront per pet "pet fee" plus sometimes additional monthly "pet rent" per pet. They know they've got you in a bind and take full advantage. The rental market is a "renters" market right now though (lots of places available), so be sure to negotiate.

That's one of the reasons we won't consider a place with carpet anywhere downstairs. I have 2 chihuahuas who are pad-trained, but the puppy thinks anything that feels like a pad (area rug, runner, carpet) IS a pad :/ Plus we prefer wood or tile anyway. We baby gate the bottom of the stairs so they have run of the downstairs. We've been in our current house for 4 1/2 years without a stitch of damage, but again, we can't speak for everyone who have dogs/cats/pigs/ponies that do damage things.

Well we definitley don't mind paying the larger fee. I fully understand the purpose of it because even though all of our animals are housebroken there will still be some work for the landlord to do after we vacate the house we're in now. Minor, of course, but scratches in the carpet for example.

To switch gears here, we would LOVE to find a house to rent, however I keep reading warnings about dealing with private owners online due to scams. Does anyone have a recommendation as to how to find a house for rent while being 100% secure that it's not a scam without actually being in Las Vegas?
