So this is what happened to me in recent months:

1. Wanted to install a shower door recently, called 3-4 Las Vegas Companies that install and sell them,
their websites show prices starting form 400 $ but when they come here for measurements price always go up (550$ and more). Reason - They say measurements "are not standard and "it will take us more time then usual".

Home depot guy wanted to charge me 490$ everything included.

Well, I ended up buying very nice 170$ door (included hardware) at Home Depot, found guy from Craigslist to install it (he asked 55$, gave him 70$). And measurements were never problem!

TOTAL 240 $ vs 490$ , 550$+ ....

2. Entrance door. Regular size, 36 x 80 in.
Called 4 LV companies that sell them (installation included), all 4 came to take measurements and show me their book, prices were from 2200-4500$ for the door I liked!!

Lowes guy told me he will charge me 1200 $ for the door and installation because their stock door (that I like) will not fit because he needs to special order it and it will cost much more and takes 2 weeks to get it.

Well, this time I called another guy from Craigslist , guy that does only doors , molding etc...

He came to my house, took measurements, went with me to Lowes, we bought beautiful door for 250$ (with discount, originally 349$ and it was SAME DOOR Lowe`s handymen guy told me it's not gonna fit) , and he asked 150$ for installation.

TOTAL 400 $ vs 1200$ , 2500$+ ...

3. Bathroom remodeling. Well this is the best one yet. I knew exactly what I wanted (tile, colors etc ) and how it would look after its done.
LV Remodeling Companies asked me from 8000$ - 13000 $) and one company even said 15.000$ but they "guarantee" it will be done in 4 days !!
Home Depot guys asked 10.000$ and then lowered to 8000 if I sign right-away. I declined.

Started to look into Craigslist again, called first person I found under "remodeling , tile services".
Explained to him what I wanted, went with him to "Floor and Décor Henderson", spent 2200$ for material and everything, he asked 1000 (job was done in 5 days.

TOTAL 3200 $ vs 8000$, 15.000$+ ......

I want to mention that all work was done very professionally and my family is very happy with results.

Now after all this im asking myself how those Companies/Contractors are still in business here.
Charging me 3-4 times more for same job , same quality material.
And even worst - lying .
Almost everyone that came to my house said " we have to charge you more because measurements are "not standard". Measurements were NEVER problem with Craigslist guys !

Only with remodeling I saved more then 10.000$ !

But I have to say something positive about this companies, when they came to me ( quote and measurements ) they were always punctual , never late !
But im not sure that's worth 10.000$ + ....
It's even worse with Angie's List…I had a 3 car garage (tandem on 1 side)… turned it into a bedroom… Three Companies from Angies List… Low 6500. High 14000. Craigslist person licensed etc… $2200 plus material $550.

Same thing with auto mechanics here…

Everyone knows i had a huge issue with Carls Auto Repair… well an update….. he just got my neighbor after I warned him about Carl.

Just to be clear, "licensed" means different things. A lot of Craigslist "contractors" called themselves licensed and will provide a license number for a business license. That is very different and not remotely the same as a contractors license.

A contractor should only be considered if they have a contractors license.
