I was dumb enough to buy my Gf a shi tzu about 2 months ago and the thing is starting to annoy me (they both live w/ me). I'm looking for info on dog training, preferably somewhere with boarding, i.e. take this unruly dog for X and bring it back tained...

Otherwise the standard classes is fiine I guess, but I dont know if they teach a dog not to pee in the house.

Any info appreciated, and me training the dog is not possible I'm gone 12 hours a day during the week.

Thanks

Geez I hate to tell you this but all dog training classes involve teaching the person who will be dealing with it. A trainer could train it to do amazing things but once you got it back home and didn't know the commands or the psychology of handling that particular animal, you'd be right back to square one. Dogs are very easy to train and also to housebreak. You might want to seriously consider finding this young dog another home. They require a great deal of time, attention and companionship and if you don't have it to give, do all of you a favor. The dog will be very adoptable at this young age.

Sounds like fair advice.

Good advice? Yeah don't train the dog, give up and give it away. Makes about as much sense as throwing your money away if you need the services of a financial advisor...give me a break.

Someone is home with the dog all day and loves it she's just not good at training, thus the question.

you could try petsmart or petco for their training.. make sure she goes to the training so she can learn the commands... we tried the puppy paper stuff, really didn't work.. newspaper did though, we kept moving it closer to the door and then outside... when the pup did it outside, he was rewarded.... when we got the 2nd and 3rd dog, it was easy, they just followed outside..

You can send a dog or horse etc.. to a trainer & they'll send it back trained but that can be expensive-It isn't true that you would have to start over. For potty training try crate training or get a doggy door. Petsmart training isnt the best around but it will help.

Reread your original post...doesn't sound much like a true lover of canines.

Wasn't it Caesar Millan, the dog whisperer, that said the problem with the dog isn't the dog ...it's the owner? If you love the dog, love it enough to learn about dog behavior. Dogs are pack animals. They understand pack mentality. People don't understand the pack mentality until they've taken enough responsibility to study it by reading and observing dog behavior. Cesar Millan's Official Website | Achieving balance between people and dogs.

Thank you Buzz. Some real duh moments here if we're talking. Make a trip to the library for a dog training book. All dog training is based on consistency. The person home with the dog all day doesn't understand to take it outside frequently, keep it contained to a small area, praise it when it goes to the bathroom and then bring it right back in? Amazing... For your benefit, I was assuming no one was home in the daytime with the dog. Since they are, all I can say is the above. Dogs are not easy. Cute as can be as puppies but they grow up and it's essential they get the attention, consistent training, discipline and socialization with other dogs and people they need now or you have an ankle biting, destructive, barking, jumping, aggressive, unhappy pet who is then hard to retrain or adopt out. I got the impression from your ha ha comment about getting the dog to be company for your goldfish that it was not a many months thought out purchase based on ideal breed selection for you and your particular situation. My apologies if it's the other way and this type of dog is the perfect breed for the two of you and you are committed and willing to dedicate many hours to it's training and happiness.
