I keep reading its all gloom and doom in Vegas. When I was down there 3 weeks ago,it seemed as lively as usual. There was a lot of people on the strip and the buffet lines were long.

i was there last wkend, aliante was packed.. strip was crowded but not packed... bellagio was light.

The issue is that the casinos are selling rooms and food cheaper because of this they may lure in more tourists but they have to get rid of employees in order to take care of that cost...The employees get laid off or less hours who in turn have no money for groceries, housing, etc, so many grocery stores and other things are closing...This is why the economy in Las Vegas is doing so badly...

Unfortunately what the kid says is true especially with the news today of the the Chrysler dealerships slated to close which include 4 here in Vegas. Then according to the report GM is scheduled to release their report tomorrow so it will not be a good weekend for the valley.

They will call a call center job a "tech job." Even the crappy jobs are disappearing. I've been trading oil, gas, and currencies but would like to find a decent job. It's just about perfect to trade from 06:30 to 13:00.

That's not unusual even in good times. But you never know how many are hired later, or the new hires may lead to more jobs later when those people start spending paychecks. Baby steps I guess.
Some call center jobs are tech jobs. I know most of the employees are either outbound or inbound sales, or providing warranty service, etc., but its all about computers, not telephones. Some call centers actually pay pretty well, but not all. A job is a job though.

When asking about the economy in Las Vegas, one should really separate Tourist Vegas from Resident Vegas. Even if The Strip is packed on the weekend...I would think little of it is trickling into the surrounding residential neighborhoods. Besides, just because The Strip is crowded, doesn't mean the casinos are raking in more profit...it might simply mean people are getting fantastic vacation bargains.
