Hello All! First time poster, long time lurker. Har har.

This forum has provided me with a lot of info so first off, thanks very much!

I am planning to move to Vegas from California for family reasons and I'm trying to line up some sort of Marketing position. I've applied online to dozens of Marketing or marketing-related jobs but don't hear much of anything back. Whether its to the biggest casinos or private offices. I know its tough out there so I'm staying patient and optimistic.

Anyone know the state of marketing/advertising/PR jobs there in LV? There are definitely jobs because everyone needs to get the word out about their company but I'm guessing just like everything else, there are too few jobs for too many applicants.

I'm a Marketing Director for a company in SoCal with a bachelor's degree so I'm confident about my job prospects, not that I know how long it'll take to land a job comparable to the one I've got. Who knows. I'll even take an entry level position to work my way on up. But just wanted someone's take on the state of these jobs there. A lot of jobs posted on careerbuilder or CL in Marketing are scams so its hard to tell.

Also, any good leads on where to apply or know of any job openings? I'd appreciate it. I'd take anything just to get my foot in the door. Thanks for reading!

What level are you looking for in marketing? What kind of marketing specifically - direct mail, online, advertising, promotions/events/PR...

Do you have any experience or just a degree? There's a difference. Do you have sales experience? Start with the large firms like R & R. Find out all the large firms and contact a person there about sending a resume. Take notes so you remember who said what, and what you told them. If you are expert in marketing, market yourself, and show them by your professionalism tangentially what you can do for them.

Folks, when looking for a job, find out who the hiring authority is. Forget about blanket resumes. Call the guy and ask for permission to submit a resume to him/her directly. Be relatively nonchalant, as if they need you and you might give them a chance at you if they don't screw around too long. For God's sake don't say that. Just sort of project it in your voice as if you are the most professional, in demand, person on earth, and are offering them a favor to do business with you. Don't be a wise*ss about it, don't oversell yourself on the phone, just hint by your tone (not in words) that they'd be doing themselves a favor to look at your resume. If at all possible find a sales person or professional who you really admire and try to emulate them when doing your pitch. And be sure to practice being them before making the call. You will have no more than 60 seconds, and in reality, probably only 20 or 30 seconds to make a pitch that will get their attention. Don't blow it...practice.

Speaking as a hiring manager, I would totally love it if people did this. HOWEVER, also please apply online for the job so that if I do want to talk to you, you're already in the HR systems.

Right. And if called I'm sure you would give them the site address. Most employers want to see that you can operate a computer.

Hello JackieB23,

Thanks for asking. I'm looking for a bachelor's degree level type of position, but I'm very open to starting from anywhere just to get my foot in the door and work hard to prove myself. I'm currently working as a Marketing Director and have been with this company 7+ years now, leading a marketing team in creating sales support materials, online/print advertising, PR, and handling tradeshow event coordination. I'm also in charge of the company websites, e-commerce activities, and online marketing. And a long list of other administrative duties I won't bore you with. I'm looking for something anywhere along those lines. Even something slightly outside them if the opportunity to advance is there.

I really appreciate you taking the time to inquire. Any opportunities you could direct me to would be much appreciated also. Thanks again!

Thanks everyone for your advice and opinions. The suggestion to contact individual personnel while having applications on file is a great one. I will do more of that. Since I am able to spend more time in LV thanks to the generosity of my current employer, I will have better opportunities to physically meet people and knock on doors instead of just filing tons of online applications like I've been doing.

Speaking of which, though I've only been doing it for a couple of weeks, I haven't had much luck in getting call backs or interviews when filing online applications like with casinos and other private companies. And since I haven't looked for employment in more than 8 years, I'm unsure about this whole online-application thing. I've always been the interview-er and hire-er at my current job. Is this really the way to apply nowadays or do those just pile up in someone's inbox and mostly go unnoticed? Maybe the answer was in the suggestion to knock on doors and place phone calls.

I'm confident I'll get something, somehow. Always have, always will. I really do appreciate all the advice and suggestions though. Good luck to all!
