Many Immigrant rights groups are slowly and quietly pushing for a significant increase in Legal Immigration into the United States. Right now America lets in millions of people into the Country and gives out 1.3 million Green Cards a year. We let in more Legal Immigrants into our country than anyplace on earth, but this fact is hidden by the mainstream media. They are giving the impression that few slots are available for Legal Immigration into America, so Illegal Immigration is necessary.

Please tell us what you think about Legal Immigration by responding to the poll and then giving your feedback.

We need to shut the door for a while. For at least a generation. We need to weed out the legal immigrants that have overstayed their visas. Then allow immigrants in only when they have something to offer this nation. No chain migration. No poor needy immigrants who come here for an easy life living off the government. Simply clamp down tight and take a hard line.

I think that an increase in LEGAL immigration would place the ILLEGALS in an even worse situation than they're already in. In today's surreal world of politically-correct madness, I can already tell you what would UNDOUBTEDLY happen, and I'd bet money on it---the cry would go up that "Illegal Immigrants are only doing the work that legal immigrants won't do". Who'd want to hire a legal immigrant and have to contend with all that formality and paperwork---they sound almost as troublesome and difficult as our own American workers---plus, the immigrants would "talk funny".....very bad idea !!

I agree with Hawkeye48 on the first two statements. As for who we let in, I think we should let in ONLY those people who are impoverished and uneducated. If we do it in a controlled way, and have systems in place (language and job training), this country can still boast of being a "land of opportunity," without ruining itself. Letting in professionals and others who "have something to offer" only gives our government an excuse to continue to deny a good education to all American children across the board. Why, for example, do we have to import doctors and nurses and computer specialists from other places such as India, the Philippines, etc? The answer is: we have to import them because it's too much trouble/too expensive to overhaul the American educational system and offer high-level education to American children, from kindergarten on. I've seen what passes as a "school" in the poorer and even middle-class neighborhoods of this nation and it is, in my opinion, our nation's greatest shame, in terms of the treatment of humanity.

What? We do not need to import poverty!! We should allow only the best foreign countries have to offer.

Of the 1 million yearly immigrants, 75% are immediate relatives (IR's) of US citizens. That means wives and children of citizens. 20% are extended relatives--brothers, sisters, adult children, parents of adult children.

The remaining 5% are professionals and transferred employees.

For those who propose "a break" from immigration, are you suggesting that US citizens should not be allowed to marry foriegners, or that US citizens married to foriegners should not be allowed to bring their spouses and children into the US?

I suggest that legal immigration needs to be increased to deal with our aging population, low unemployment, and illegal immigration problem.

Seal it. The first thing that needs to happen is the border must be sealed.

Keep it the same. I believe that we should continue to allow the 0.75m IR's to immigrate through a streamlined version of the current system (background check, proof of financial support, medical checkup/screening). I also think we should leave the employee transfer system alone.

Eliminate it. I think we should eliminate the immigration of 250,000 extended relatives based on family connections.

Increase it. I think we should allow an unlimited number of applications for permanent residence to those who complete a accredited 4-year college degree and find work rather than educating these people and sending them home to compete with US workers.

Increase it. I think we should increase legal immigration to ~0.5% of the total us population per year, tied to the US population and unemployment rates. If unemployment rises, the immigration rate decreases. Applicants must pass a background check, and find work that keeps them and their family above the poverty level and paying into the tax system. Illegal immigrants within the US would go through this system without having to leave, but they would be required to pay additional fines and back-taxes that new immigrants from outside the US would not. Therefore an illegal immigrant could avoid the fines/back taxes by returning to their country of origin and "getting in line" there.

sponger: But what you're saying is, in effect, that there should be no penalty for entering the country illegally. To merely charge a fine and collect back taxes is to claim, by default, that American residency and citizenship can be bought, and that laws enforcing our borders are irrelevant.

1) No, the penalty is a stiff fine.

2) No, my proposed reforms don't mean you can "buy" citizenship any more than the current system does. You're confused about the immigration process. It goes like this:
--Background Check/border inspection--> Visa Holding Alien --after 2 to 10 years in good standing + additional background checks and paperwork--> Permanent Resident Alien (Green Card) ---after 3-5 years in good standing/civics test + additional background checks and paperwork--> US Citizen.

I'm proposing that illegal aliens be allowed to take the first step to Visa holder. You cannot earn US citizenship (in current cases or future proposed reforms) through anything but being a good resident and maintaining your civic responsibility.

Under the current system, illegal aliens who returned to their home country would be barred from even applying for legal entry to the US for 10 years. After that, there's still basically no chance of them getting a VISA.

3) That's like saying because we don't throw speeders in jail, speed limits are irrelevant. Fines are an appropriate civic punishment for breaking some laws.

We don't need fines. The illegals have no money, how are they going to pay fines ?? Close the borders, build a wall, send them all home. Charity starts at home , we need to take care of Americans not every broke ass , impoverished illegal that is tired of his country holding them down. America is laying dorment while the illegals take over, let them go home and revolt so their governments take care of them. It is not our responsibility to feed , clothe, provide medical care to them. Yet as time goes by they will revolt here until OUR government folds to their demands. Bring the military home and let them start cleaning up our own house.
