Should Australia have the same immigration rules for Americans as the USA has for Australians ?
Unless one can get a Green card or marry a American or get educated in the states the chances are slim you will get in.

Why should we allow Americans to immigrate to Australia as Electricians when the USA does not allow Australians to immigrate to the USA as an Electrician ?

Presumably because Australia needs electricians and the USA does not?
While some bilateral agreements exist, a country needs to make immigration rules that suit it for it's own sake, not in a tit-for-tat.

America will let any Australian with a bachelor's in to do a job that requires a bachelors. That's pretty damn lax if you ask me.

If we're gonna go for tit-for-tat, OP, Australia should have a special visa agreement for the US as well. We have one for Australians only, called the E3 visa, though Australia is easy enough to get in anyways, I hear. We should have an AU-US Trans-Tasman type agreement, like what you benefited from

Exactly. Furthermore, unlike the much reviled and heavily regulated H1B visa, spouses of E3 visa are allowed to work in the US legally. E3 visa, specifically created for Australian citizens, is by far the most lax work visa out there. If this is not special treatment, I don't know what is.

I'd argue that the L1 is the most lax.

Maybe.. but IIRC, only companies with both US and overseas operations are eligible to sponsor for L1. Whereas E3 doesn't have the same regulation.
