Hi!
I would like to go to the US for a 5 months training and maybe in the middle come back to my home country for a week (in xmas). I am european and I though to entry with the Visa Waiver Program (just valid for 90days) but I think it will be a red flag if I leave the US and entry again just one week after. What do you think? Perhaps it is better the B1 business visa (for 6 months?).
Thank you in advance!

While there is no minimum time you need to spend abroad between two visa waivers, I am sure a re-entry within such a short time will raise red flags with the immigration officers, rightfully so.
For anything other than tourism or short business meetings you'll need an appropriate visa. Without knowing what exactly you're going to do in America, nobody can give you the answer what kind of visa though. The place that provides you said "training" should know about it and help you with your visa.

Many certificates for example. English also isn't the first language for most people in the world and OP can have chosen the wrong word. Who knows.

OP, with Trump in office and all the stories coming from people at border crossings even with VISAs, your best choice is to go for a B1 VISA if you can qualify.

B1 does not cover extended training. Not knowing what OP plans means guessing.
