I went for immigrant visa interview yesterday at the american embassy UK. They took fingerprint, asked me to swear and sign the papers, gave me a booklet saying welcome to america, but the immigration officer said you have to provide joint sponsor, and a new police certificate, and when you have that, send the documents along with your passport and we will send you visa documents.
Honey, you really really need to speak to an immigration attorney, you know. I didn't mean to sound rude but, would you really trust an advise about your future from a complete stranger whom you've never even met? If you don't understand what they're asking you, why don't you speak directly to the source at the US embassy?

get a immigration lawyer with a good reputation and attempt to appeal the process somehow.

You will get NO BETTER ADVICE then what she said.
PLEASE see a professional, and make sure you check his/her credentials and references. Ask around.
As with most government organizations in the world you must file ALL the right paperwork, and just one mistake can take months to resolve. It doesn't matter if it sounds insane when they say they want “7 copies with the third one signed upside down”. Get it done. That’s the nature of government and a professional can really make a difference.
The old UK police certificates are out of date so you have to send for a new one. I think they're less expensive than the old ones but it still takes awhile to receive it.
As for the sponsor, you have to prove that you are a certain amount above the US poverty level so that you will not end up on welfare. Check out the USCIS site. You will need a person in the US to sponsor you, to produce piles of evidence that they have the money to support you and that they are willing to do so.
If you have LOADS of money, you can probably self sponsor but most people need a US citizen to sponsor them. It's very very hard to ask someone to sponsor you, it's very embarrassing and puts them on the spot. The only other way is to have a job that will sponsor you and that's as rare as hen's teeth. There are only certain professions that will sponsor someone -- doctor, researcher, things like that. We can thank 911 for this mess.

What's there to advise? Get the joint sponsor, a new police certificate as they said and it sounds like you're home free.
