Well I have been living in the Lehigh Valley for over a year and I am looking to buy a home. I have lived in Allentown by the Bus Terminal and now I am in Bethlehem. I am looking to purchase a home in the West Allentown area but it is not in the Parkland School District it is Allentown City school district. I have looked all over this immediate area for homes and have found nothing with the sqaure footage that I am looking for. I would like at least 2000 sq. ft. I am really torn because I really want this home and it is priced well. I have no children now but would like to start a family when I have a home. I am very concerned about not being in the Parkland School District. I am also concerned about being in a diverse area ( as much as can be here in the valley I know it will not be like NY but some diversity would be nice) I want to stay in the 220k price range. So my question is :
1. Should I be that concerned about not being in the Parkland School District
2. What other areas would you recommend that I look to be in my price range with a the square footage and the schools.

Congratulations on finding a house you love! The West End is beautiful in so many places (a dear friend lives there and loves it so much, he walks for exercise all over the place w/no issues), but I wouldn't want children in those schools.

Google the archives of The Morning Call for more info. This incident occurred near William Allen HS just yesterday: Juvenile In Custody In Shooting Near School - Regional News - Lehigh Valley Story - WFMZ Allentown

A family who does sports with our son has four children in the Allentown School District currently, at various schools, with two in William Allen. Two of the four have been victims of crimes within the school this year. Serious crimes, with police involvement. They are looking into alternative schooling options.

If you have your heart set on the house in West Allentown, then a possibility would be to consider alternative education options. There are so many these days: Cyberschooling, homeschooling, charter schools, private schools, religious-affiliated schools etc.

Just a few links to share from the Allentown area to give you an idea:
Home - Roberto Clemente Charter School
Welcome to Seven Generations Charter School: An Environmentally Focused Charter School in the East Penn School District
Lehigh Valley Academy

Hope that helps!

Buying a home in a desirable school district is important - even if you never use the schools, it helps with resale.

I agree with KristyLiz, even if you don't use the schools the location will come up with resale. Can you just wait and look a bit longer? If you have your own realtor who knows what you want they will keep an eye out and let you know about properties as soon as they are listed.

I withdrew my offer just did not feel comfortable with the district. I am looking in the Bethlehem area again so hopefully with the holidays being over I can get my realtor back in the saddle. I want to stay near Calypso Elem. so I am concentrating my search in that area. Thanks for all the feedback. Any on the Bethlehem district would be great.
