No doubt this question has been asked before and I'll search old threads but I also want to get current information so I thought I'd post it again. We're planning on moving our smaller stuff ourselves but want to get professional movers for our furniture. When we bought our house 11 years ago, we bought all new solid cherry hardwood furniture so it's really good stuff. Naturally I don't want it to get damaged. I'd greatly appreciate any recommendations for a long distance moving company based in Nassau County (I'm in New Hyde Park). Thanks!

why does the moving company need to be based in Nassau? These outfits typically have...you know...vehicles.

I realize that but I don't want to go with a company located far away from me since they'll probably charge more just to drive to my house.

YOu get charged by weight - not mileage. No matter where they come from they have to weigh the truck before they come to you, load it up, then take it back and weigh it.

We are using Bay Shore Moving (a division of Allied) - I got 3 estimates and they were right in the middle. My sister and my parents used them for their moves. My sister's actual charge was less than the estimate (they estimate the weight when they come to your house). I also liked the fact that they added in certain charges instead of springing them on me at the end...like they automatically charge you for crating your mattresses, so I don't have to ask about it the day of the move - I like that they think of things like that ahead of time.
