we will be relocating to NYC in about six months. planning to rent for the first 6month to a year, and then buy.
Wanted to get some feedback on which areas to look at.
We have a 2 yr old, school is very important to us. we do plan on making this our permanent resident (unless we hit lottery ).
We will need min 3 bedrooms, 4 is ideal. min of 2 bath.
would like 40min-1hr of commute to Manhattan by train if possible.
pricing around 550k-650k.
Have relative in Queens and will have relative in Long Island, as they're looking too.
Don't mind a fix upper, although i don't know if there's any fix uppers in nicer neighborhoods
In case you are unfamiliar with the local geography
rel2NYC, in case you are unfamiliar with the local geography, I've sent you an explanation of the very, very confusing geography of "Lawn Guyland" as a DM (Direct Message).
we're from NC. I know there's more ppl moving to the South for affordability of larger homes. But i'm going the opposite direction for job and also diversity, want my kid to grow up in a diverse group, and receive bilingual education too.
After a little research, feel like it's better to stay on the conservative side to find a home 450-550k range instead, considering the tax effect.
Thanks for all your input.

No problem with second language - Spanish is the "unofficial" language in some parts of Long Island, mainly Suffolk. Are you ready for at least 9K in annual extortion, um, I mean taxes?

Ha ha, I just moved from Long Island to NC and my new area is ONE THOUSAND times more diverse than where we lived. Good school districts on Long Island are not known for their diversity. But good luck. And make sure you plan for explosive increases in your taxes, not just what you originally buy at. I still think you can find a nice house in your price range.
You might want to check out Floral Park. Great commute and schools, but note there is no middle school (elementary is K-6, High School 7-12). In Queens, you can check out anything in school district 26 (but note class sizes are crowded). Good luck!
Floral park, New hyde park, mineola, in queens I would recommend checking out Bayside
