A friend of mine has a, what appears to be, hurt raccoon in her yard. In her research for someone to come get it, she found out that the only ones to do so either will euthanize it(hurt or not) or charge her $350 to trap and release.
Does anyone here have any other info on alternatives??
Call the Freeport Animal Shelter, they had a recommended group but forgot the name.
Many racoons live in the sewer system so when we had the huge snowfall that blocked some of them from returning and we had one in our yard for a few days. If the sewer system is overflowing from the rain they may be stuck until it resides.
They dislike being out in the light, maybe you can put a garbage can near it to use at a home but I would not get too close.
I can't believe those things are out of hibernation already!!! I have had my garbage cans knocked over twice already last week (and yeah they know how to unlock the locking handles!!)
I had a raccoon use a window well in the old house as a nest for babies. Called police/FD and they recommended wildlife trappers who trap animals and release them on a preserve near Massapequa I believe. To reach Bobby and Cathy Horvath regarding wildlife in need of rescue, call 516-293-0587
Trapping and releasing anywhere near where you live is stupid because they will find their way back. If you want to be a bleeding heart go take them way out east or something.
get a coon size box trap so you can let them go or you can drown them in water ..no need to shoot them ...I sound mean but the population is out of control ...
