So, I grew up on Long Island in the 80's and 90's, and I have very fond memories of a cemetary behind a Chinese place called Jacky Kitchen on Jericho Turnpike just west of New York Ave.

As kids, it was a hallowed ground where ancient people were buried. It was an hour long bike ride from across town, over Wolf Hill Rd. (where the last wolf was shot on Long Island, mind you) and into a shadier side of town. You could make out at least one date from the 1600's on the tombstones, but the rest was in a foreign language. To me anything before MY time was ancient, and this was almost inconceivable.

As a teenager it was a place to go drink, and sit around. I don't think anyone ever really vandalized the place, at least no one I knew, because it was such an odd little cemetery, in between a run down city park (Kosta Park I believe?), and a Chinese restaurant. It had one of those green and white Municipal signs, but any information to be had from it was sprayed over with graffiti long ago. The cemetery was surrounded by a 10 foot chain link fence, completely overgrown with English Ivy, with a massive canopy of old maples and oaks.

It was also pretty rough, with litter everywhere, over-turned headstones, and it was also in a rougher part of town (I was a kid then). I remember it to this day as somewhat of a dangerous place, where the local bullies would do all kinds of drugs during breaks from basketball at the park. I remember seeing my first gun at the park. I came from a upper middle class upbringing.

I also remember thinking that someone should fix it up, and I wouldn't mind volunteering for it. But I never figured out what the history there was, or what the place was even called. I wonder if anyone else has been there, and if it still even exists. This is the lot directly behind Jacky Kitchen. I haven't been on Long Island since 1999, and haven't been in the cemetary since probably 1997, so I'm not sure it's still there. I heard a lot has changed. Didn't they recently tear down the Town House, which is just down the street from this cemetary? I would love to go back and see everything now.

I have scoured the internet for some information on the place, but there's pretty much nothing that I can find. If someone knows of a site, or some city-database with some info, that would be awesome. Or maybe someone can go there and take a picture and give us all a general update? And finally, is there a non-profit that can keep up the place?

Probably not the same place you're talking about, but right down the road:

Nick Carr: The Forgotten Cemetery at Home Depot

Home Depot Cemetery | Cemeteries

EDIT: check that, I think I found it - the Long Swamp / Barker's Lane Cemetery:

I'd love to see that place before the d-bags ruin it any further.

A major step would be discerning the language. I'd guess Dutch. You'd have to get a transcription from the stones though.

Default answer to Huntington Station Cemetery ? from a very old post

I saw your post and figured since its 11 years old you deserve an answer if you haven't gotten one yet.

This cemetery , called Long Swamp Cemetery is on Barkers Lane. It has recently been restored by the Huntington Manor Fire Department and some local Corporation that I assume gave them funds to do this.American Legion Post from Greenlawn was also involved. There are actually 3 Revolutionary War soldiers buried there. One of them, Provate Joseph Ireland, enlisted in 1776. At the age of 62 years old! He , at the time , had a wife and 10 children. He was part of the First Regiment of the Huntington Militia.
