It will be tight, but I'm sure you can live a very basic life making 32K on Long Island. I have a family and we live on only 80K, so anything is possible.

Don't listen to people here, many Long Islanders have a seriously hard time differenciating between wants and needs.

That being said though you probably could do better living somewhere else (out of the Tri-state area), but if you really want to stay here you could make 32K work if you are single, no kids and no debt. Just don't expect anything other than a basic existance.

You must have bought your home before the real estate bubble.

The OP is looking to possibly relocate to LI, alone with no one else to work and bring in a salary and no parents to live with. I wouldn't advise him to do it for that kind of money.

I totally agree with the above. Long Island is a pretty pricey place to live. After the year 2002 or so, we had a huge housing bubble and you just can't survive on $32,000 per year. I made that amount of money working full time in 2000 and had a studio apartment paying $700 per month and could barely afford a car loan along with it. Trust me when I say, rents have gone up a lot more since that time. If you want to struggle to live, by all means, move here but if you don't want to struggle, then either stay where you are or find a job that pays at least $45k to $50k just to rent a 1 bedroom or 2 bedroom apt. Other than that, to buy a home here (even after the housing bubble burst), you need to earn about $115,000 per year. The poster that said her and her family make $80k and survive must have brought her house way before the bubble. I am 38 and my husband and I struggle to live here...the only reason we do so is b/c he cannot get a job transfer to another state and we were both born here. While I love LI, it costs a lot of money to live here.

Good luck.

Would you suggest this advice to your family if they were on their own with no support network? 32K is 1,200 a month after tax - try it, let me know how you can survive this very basic existence.

Basics - food,.water, shelter, you can use the ER for medical care. All of these are needs. Betcha can't get all those in Nassau Cty with $1200 a month, heck, you probably can't make it in Suffolk either.

Are you having a hard time differentiating between wants and needs? You may WANT to eat 3x a day; but you can still stay alive if you eat EVERY OTHER DAY. Just make sure you drink plenty of water to soothe the hunger pangs.

You're right, no need to buy food, I'll just throw my line in the water (we are surrounded by water on three sides right?) and wait to catch a striped bass (what's the worst that can happen - oh I forgot, I'd need a fishing license for saltwater fishing and oh! we're not allowed to fish striped bass, silly me ) or I'll hitch or walk over the Meadowbrook to set my snares and catch me some rabbits (have the illegals beat me to it yet? ).

Shelter - why, no need for that either, I'll just set up my tent outside Port North's spacious and affordable with a family on 80K's front lawn - the neighbors won't mind their hospitality as I take budget pointers from them on how to actually save money and live on my luxurious budget of 32K gross salary.

Now, I've got it made, I can live in the lap of luxury on LI's North Shore (well, semi-North Shore) and head over to East Hampton and Fire Island this summer! Who knew??

And I always thought we lived on an Island...
Water on 3 sides would make this place a Long Peni...

PENINSULA.. What? What did you think I was going to say?

Well, I was accounting for our neighbors to the west - Queens, I mean LI - West.

32K is 1,200 a month? Wouldn't that be like a 55% tax rate?

I'm pretty sure it'd be more like 2,000 a month. While I certainly wouldn't move to Long Island for that kind of money and I don't think it'd be a particularly pleasant existence, it's probably not impossible.
