Heaven help those on the south shore who have dealt with the loss of homes and flood damages due to Sandy.

I was wondering the same thing. So many homes were lost or severely damaged there and people were told to stay away. Of course some people never evacuated for Sandy, so maybe they are evacuating now.

Fire Island should be PERMANTLY evacuated

it was extremely stupid to build residential structures on a barrier island

By that logic, all of Pt Lookout, Lido Beach, Long Beach and Atlantic Beach should be permanently evacuated too... That is a lot of ppl that would have to look for alternate housing. LI is crowded enough.

AMEN - someone with common sense.

It's difficult NOT to have your heart break for the people who have suffered personal losses of the magnitude we have witnessed over the past week - but at the same time - it's difficult to understand the lack of intelligence in building and buying homes in areas just a few feet above sea level.

If people want to live in low-lying or oceanfront areas - then let them assume ALL OF THE RISK and don't spend a dime of OUR TAX DOLLARS subsidizing their poor judgement.

They should have never built on the barrier islands to begin with, I regret what happened to those people in this storm and the last but at this point LI really need to do some serious thinking about Fire Island,Long Beach, Breezy Point not to mention the Bay areas. Rebuilding in these areas makes no sense, time for a phased approach with compensation to move these homes elsewhere.
