Personally gym memberships are a waste, IMO, but the max I would pay is like $20 a month.
It depends what you want. NYSC has a pool. That costs like $60/mo but there are much cheaper gyms around.
I dont understand why anyone would pay for a gym when you can walk or run around the neighborhood for free.
That works really well in the winter months with 4 feet of snow on the ground. Oh, and what about people who want to do circuit training/weights or kickboxing classes?
I belong to L.A. Fitness. I dont know how much I pay because I signed up for the lifetime membership a few years ago and paid a lump sum of some crazy high figure, but its worth it for me because I go at odd hours and also use the pool (I believe all the LA Fitness gym locations have decent sized pools and offer aqua-fitness classes).
Yeah, just run around the neighborhood when its -7 degrees. Or maybe walk outside a try to find tree branches to do pull ups on. Or maybe find a few big stones for curls?
You're to funny.

I used to exercise more outdoors but now I have kids. I exercise in the morning before they get up and I need to be in the shower no later than 6:30 in order to get them to school or camp and get myself to work. In my opinion, exercising outdoors before 6:30 am is frankly uncomfortable and unsafe most of the year. Plus I'm able to add strength and balance training at the gym whereas I only did endurance with some moderate flexibility work before getting more serious.
So those are my reasons...not trying to be combative :-)
Do you have a local YMCA? When I was a member in Bay Shore, it was around $60 for a couples membership (don't remember single membership), and that gave you access to gym, track, basketball court, pool, and classes.

I workout the "free" outdoors plus go to the gym. there is almost no replacement to build up my core strength & focus on specific event I am training for.
