So on Sat around lunch time, I am walking with my toddler down the block while my older kids are playing in the front yard with the neighbor's kid. I see a van going down the block and it looks like it's looking for a parking spot. I am a bit freaked out about kids safety, so I turn around and walk fast to the direction of my house (we were maybe like 3 houses away to begin with, not far by any means, maybe 200 feet max), and the van parks on the corner, which is 2 houses before mine. The passengers do not get out, so I wait a bit and then pretend that the toddler wants to see something on that corner, walk by, singing silly songs and pretending that I am not curious when I notice that the window of the van is slightly open and the unmistakable smell of marijuana comes through. I got completely panicked, took the kids inside and called my neighbor to ask her what to do. She came out and gave the guys a dirty look and then some other neighbors were driving by, so she stopped them and was telling them about the van, they all started pointing in that direction, eventually, the van left. I was about to call the cops, I mean, this is in a middle of the afternoon, literally in front of everyone's eyes, and besides the fact that it's drugs, how do I know these guys are not going to kidnap the kids? How should I have acted in this situation?

If you had called the police, at least that would have been on the record in case it happens again with the same vehicle.

Unfortunately there are so many drug houses around in "good" neighborhoods along with vehicles where drug deals are taking place inside the vehicle (I watched one last night around 1:15 AM that my drug dealing neighbor took part in), that what you report doesn't surprise me at all. A very sad commentary on today's society. I'm actually getting used to the garbage that lives across from us. (We have two drug houses in our small neighborhood that the police definitely know about but have failed miserably to do anything whatsoever about them - what ARE we paying their exhorbitant salaries and pensions for?)

If you're into misery likes company, the house that is directly across the street from where we live has not one but 2 drug dealers living in it. These criminals own the house. The father and the son are the dealers/addicts. The mother is an addict too but doesn't deal. Merely abets. Lovely. The cops don't do anything even though they know what's going on. I think they're waiting for someone to get hurt before they officially step in and arrest them.

It is very troubling when you think of when they're high and don't give a damn about running someone over, or breaking into houses for money for their habit (although that stopped in 2006 with the exception that the son stole twice from his addict mother), or attacking someone, etc. They're the perfect example of trash. Everyone here in the neighborhood wishes they'd move - an understatement. No one talks to them. Most everyone is afraid of them.

The thing I've come up with to get them caught is to hire a PI to tail them, get their crimes on film and turn it over to the DA and get them locked up. I'm currently mulling that idea over. The police are worthless regarding this awful situation.

Imagine if marijuana becomes legal ? It will become politically incorrect to call them drug dealers. It looks as if it is happening before our eyes.
This country is going down rapidly.

I really wouldn't be worried about the guy being a kidnapper. He was probably just looking for a place to smoke away from a main road. I'm not saying that's right and wouldn't want it on my block, just saying I wouldn't be worried about him committing another crime on the block.

Personally I think alcohol is a much bigger scourge on society than weed will ever be, but that's just my opinion.

Cannabis use doubles chances of vehicle crash
Quote:
Drivers who consume cannabis within three hours of driving are nearly twice as likely to cause a vehicle collision as those who are not under the influence of drugs or alcohol...
Given the van's occupants were or had been doing something in the van to cause the smell of pot to waft out of it, it is safe to guess that they 'consumed cannabis within three hours of driving.'

Police: Driver high on marijuana hits, kills pedestrian in Vancouver | Local & Regional | KATU.com - Portland News, Sports, Traffic Weather and Breaking News - Portland, Oregon

Driving high or drunk are both illegal -- is it more acceptable to drive high as there aren't as many driving-while-stoned deaths?

Relax. These guys were only looking for a place to tune up. They are not interested in you or your kids.

You lost me here.

Do you seriously run inside your house whenever a big bad car drives down your block?

No, I did not run inside my house when the big car drove by-I ran after I smelled marijuana. My husband left to run errands, I was by myself with 3 kids and honestly, did not want to stay outside with these guys so close to my house. And if they were looking for a quiet place to smoke the weed, there are a few more places in the area that are a lot more secluded than the corner they chose.

Advantage to living in a village with an overpaid police force is the ability to call them and have them sort this stuff out for you. Then again, usually where there's village police this stuff doesn't happen in the first place.
