Arrive at 09:32, you may be at the gate at 10:15, but why take a chance ?
If you have the kind of luck I do, then LIRR will be late that one day you travel, and just to rub it in, when you take the earlier train, everything will run like clockwork
I"d get there early, regardless, because the weather is not supposed to be too good on Sunday mornng. Your flight may be delayed because of bad weather, but then so might your train.
FWIW our son flies out of Macarthur regularly for business. The security check in is usually fairly quick and nothing like JFK or LaGuardia as far as liines. His 'normal' from curb drop off to being at the gate (Southwest) is about 15 minutes. This is with carry on and no checked bags.
I live 10 minutes from MacArthur and when I took a flight out I arrived 60 minutes early. But it's hit or miss at any Airport, 90 minutes is sufficient time.
I think you should plan on the earlier train. You just never know what's gonna happen. Last time we were on LI we wanted to take the train from Mineola to Jamaica to get the air train. Get to the station at 7 a.m. and train sitting there. No info to be found from the underpaid personnel. Ask the guys milling around on the platform if this is the train to Jamaica. "Oh, yeah it's going to Jamaica hardy har har". Bunch of union wiseasses so one of them pulls us aside (guess he didn't want to be seen being nice) and says "someone jumped at Merillon Ave so this is train is going nowhere anytime soon, we've been here an hour already". Lucky we were at Mineola where there are plenty of taxes and it was early so we were able to get a taxi (that had gas - this was right after Sandy).
Long story short, don't get too much on a perfect trip when the LIRR is involved.

Thanks, everyone...this is my first time using MacArthur, so I do appreciate all the insight.
As I said up thread, it was a hypothetical question. I'll probably take the earlier train, if I don't get a ride (still locking down the details). Taking the LIRR out of the equation (as we all agree it adds a whole new dynamic), how early would you arrive for an 11:40 Sunday morning flight? I usually do 90 minutes at LGA/JFK, but is ISP as quick as they say?
Regardless of the train I take (if I take it), what's the deal with these LIRR/ISP packages somebody told me about? Is a taxi better? I read online that the taxi is $5.

So I did take the early train and got through security rather quick (~10 minutes). It's still better than getting here late and trying to race through.
In case anyone searches this thread later, I took the shuttle to ISP for $5. It leaves at the station's front entrance by Dunkin Donuts. It took about 7 minutes...not bad.
