I'm a big fan of indie films and I know finding a good theater that specializes in indie and foreign films are hard to come by. Does anyone who lives on LI know any good indie theater spots? It would be helpful to also input how far it is away from the Stony Brook area since I'm moving there next month. Please and thank you.

The University has an annual film festival. It's possible the university might screen films year-round so I'd check with them.
Cinema Arts Center in Huntington. is probably your best bet. It's a bit of a hike from Stony Brook though (30-40 minutes) but screens current indie and foreign films as well as classics.
If you're up for traveling to the Hamptons or NYC I'd recommend Sag Harbor Cinema in Sag Harbor and BAM Rose Cinemas in downtown Brooklyn.

Oh, I didn't know about that. I will be living on campus so I guess I will be best in luck there with the theater. I will look more into Cinema Arts Center. I think the commute there shouldn't be that bad by public transportation and a bike ride to get there. As for the ones in the Hamptons and Brooklyn, those seems pretty far, but if I'm travelling to those locations for any reason, I will make sure I will check them out. I'm sure they are bigger then the other ones. Thanks for the recommendations and info!
Second on Cinema Arts Center. I went there a few weeks ago with a friend of mine and saw Much Ado About Nothing. It's a nice theater, I want to saw 3 or 4 screens. I'm interested in checking out the other events they have there from time to time too. Plus, there's downtown Huntington nearby to catch a bite to eat afterward.

Thanks Okellies. I was checking out the Cinema Arts Center webpage and it looks like a nice indie place. The town of Huntington looks nice also, it's bigger than the Stony Brook area I will be living at. I guess I will have to wait until I move to LI next month to find it out for myself!
This is in Nassau but Malverne Movie theater shows a lot of Indie films.
Ah yes! I was going to suggest this place, but the OP is all the way in Stony Brook and that would be a drive. I miss that place sometimes. Wednesday's were the cheap day I believe.

I will check that one out! Nowhere is too far for a good indie theater, especially when there is a film I really want to watch.
If you keep your eyes out for goings on at the University, I'm sure they show a lot of indie cinema there from time to time.
