I see some more money has been put into this by the state. We've been in our home a year and plan on staying 20-30 yrs. and just replaced the roof.. lipa bill around $2400 the past year. I was told by the energy audit guys that we only needed a few on the second floor in the rear of the house.
I declined the insulation job that would be paid through the lipa bill but perhaps solar panels would be adjusted on the lipa bill for this too. all you have to do is pay interest?
I HAVE ZERO MONEY TO LAY OUT OUT OF POCKET. Should I even bother getting an estimate?

I suggest you speak to at least three different company's about solar installations for your home.
Honestly saying only need a few solar panels and spending $2400 last year to lipa. What are you looking at accomplish?
The initial outlay will probably be much more than $2400, but this will be recovered over time.
I don't know what a promo for a company sounds like but this sure as heck sounds like one. New sign up and raving about a particular company. I believe there is even a referral code in the link somewhere.

I only refured the company who did the instalation because they did a very good job. There is no so called refural code, and no financial incentive in promoting them.
Update:
According to the PSEG Website - like rollover minutes on a cell phone bill, net metering gives renewable energy customers full credit on their utility bills for the excess clean power they deliver to the grid. the electric meter will spin in reverse. The excess electricity is returned to the system. At the end of each month, the net metered customer is billed only for the net consumption, that is, the amount of electricity consumed, less the amount of electricity produced. This is called "net metering." Your meter is currently spinning in the "Consumption" mode. To spin your meter backwards due to PV, we need to reverse the dials direction to simulate a reversing meter.
Having solar energy over a year now, our electric bill (Net Meter Billing) is less compared to the bills (Balanced Billing) before switching over.
** One thing that is a concern withNet Metering compared to Balance Billing - receiving less credit when the electric meter goes backwards, being charge more on electric we do use from the grid.
I spent a year researching different companies and finally settled on Trinity Solar. I obtained about five different quotes over the past 12 months and spent months on different forums and solar product websites. I am leasing 40 - 250w panels making up a 10KW system.
Contract was signed back in early January, buildings department permit filed, architect is doing the drawings and will submit them.
Zero out of pocket. All I need to do is pay Trinity my lease cost every month, which is about $40 below my electric bill. They cover the install, monitoring and maintenance. I have a zero escalator clause in my contract, unlike some other PPAs that go up 2.9% per year.
I have a fixed lease for the next 20 years, so I will pay the same price for power 5 year, 10 years, 15 years, 20 years from now.
I expect the panels to be installed sometime in late April, early May, just in time to start harvesting.
NYSERDA recently received a $1B infusion and many of these credits will run out in 2015-2016 so if you're thinking about it, now is the time to seriously start your research.
Trinity has installers in Bellmore, LI and I'm in Farmingdale, I wanted to deal with a company that has a local presence. They have a small sales office on Vets Highway in Bohemia.
------------
System makeup:
40 - 250 watt Trina panels
Three PV Powered inverters (3 separate strings to reduce shading effects).
------------
Feel free to post any questions about solar, I've learned enough to be able to assist others in their research.
If you're interested in getting a quote, drop me a PM and I'll refer you to my salesperson. He is also local, lives in Hicksville and works all of LI.
^^^ How much is it per month for the lease ? (I know its $40 less than your bill, but how much is it ?)
No other cost ? Installation ? New customer sign up ? any other ?
