Can someone explain why LI's gas prices are just about the highest in US today?
gasbuddy.com shows we're $00.09/gallon lower than San Fran, which is usually the most expensive in the 48 states, but our local gas prices are trending higher than LA and San Diego. We're about $.40 higher than the national average:

The average price is California is $3.606, in New York $3.671, in Pennsylvania $3.435, in Illinois $3.413, in Ohio $3.411 and in Michigan $3.407. Theses six states include more than a third of the U.S. population.
Surely the extra taxes, fees and surcharges that are a part of NY/LI life are not finding the way into highways or road maintenance... where does it all go?

How much is it today? We were up last weekend and it wasn't that much more than here - maybe $.25 cents a gallon? I know that's still a difference but compared to other times we've been up there it wasn't as big of a difference.

^^depends what part of NJ. I frequent NJ and I notice there can quite a difference in various regions of NJ. From experience, I would say slightly south of central NJ seems to be cheapest generally...I've seen as much as 80-90 cent difference.
The township of Huntington is always higher as. Self serve is not allowed
