Hey guys,

I'm a photographer out in Westbury.

Lately I've been looking to get into astrophotography a bit. Does anyone know of any fairly "dark" areas that aren't too polluted with light from the city?

I'm thinking a drive out to Montauk or Riverhead, but if there's something closer I'd love to check it out.

Thanks!

I agree with lifetime. If you're willing to drive out to Montauk, there are so many places you can go with darker skies - Pennsylvania, Northern Hudson Valley. If this is not a specific Long Island project for you, you'd have much better luck elsewhere.

One of the most incredible skies I've ever seen anywhere, was on the Orient - New London ferry. It was following some intense rainy windy weather and when the clouds cleared, it was just unbelievable. I don't know how it is with more typical weather.

I was at Orient Point for a weekend with my family and my son marveled T all of the stars you could see because of the total darkness.

For most incredible skies, try seven miles out of Yosemite, hopefully without smoke from fires.

Thanks guys, I'll look into all these spots. It's not really a LI only project. I did go out to PA, the Altoona area, but it was too cloudy to shoot. I've been meaning to go to Cherry Springs for a while now. I probably will this summer.

lol at the last comment. I'll just wait for LIPA to mess up again, hah.
