I'm buying a house in Nassau and need to buy insurance beforehand. Can anyone recommend a good agent? I tried a couple that I found online and they were awful, telling me they'd call me back and not calling back. If I have to chase after them to buy a policy, what will it be like when they already have my money and I need to make a claim?
Had a surprisingly good experience with a company called XL brokerage in suffolk. They connected me with an upstate company that is rated well but not one of the big boys. 3 years now and my premium has basically been unchanged. You do pay a 100 dollar broker fee at inception, but that was far less than the amt i was saving when i switched so it made sense.
Call the State Farm and Allstate agents closet to your house. Or just walk in. Many have Saturday hours if you can't get there during the week. Then call a broker and get a few quotes. We used Dooley Deremer in Garden City for our first policy.

I agree. OP why don't you call a local state farm or Liberty Mutual agent and get some quotes? Unless this house is on the water or in a flood zone I would recommend using a local agent. I would only use a broker if you couldn't get insurance locally.
I had issues finding a broker when I bought my home nearly 4 years ago due to the proximity to the water (baldwin harbor area). I eventually went with a broker named Samantha at Ability Insurance in Baldwin, she got me the best rates on homeowners and flood and was very knowledgeable.

Echo all of this. We had a wonderful experience with our local State Farm office in Mineola (Jim Patterson on Jericho Turnpike).

Good luck. Where is the house?
Funny story (or not): I asked the sellers for the name of their agent, who happens to be State Farm, and they gave it to me. I called their agent and the agent said they were "too busy" to add any new clients but they'd put me on a several month waiting list if I want! So now apparently it's easier to get into college than to get someone to take my money for home owner's insurance.
The agents must be making a ton of money if they are "too busy" (aka too lazy) to take on new clients.
Does it matter where my agent is? Do I need the agent to be in the same town or an adjacent town to my house? If I need to make a claim, do I have to deal with the agent or just call a claims number? I ask b/c if I get a jerky agent but never have to deal with them again, I guess that is ok. However, if I would have to deal with the agent in the event of a claim, I'd want someone who is actually interested in getting my business.
