NYC public schools are Dec 31st. I think it makes more sense. Why cut off December babies. Poor them!

My sister has an October 10 birthday and her school back in the day let you if you were close to December 1 jump ahead if you were mature enough.

She finished her Graduate Degree by her 21st birthday.

Only one boy with mental issues and one girl who was born xmas week in all three of my daughters classes held their kids back. With working parents today they want them GONE, and daycare for a six year old is crazy. The kids is too old.

There are 4 kids in my son's pre-k who turned 5 in the fall. The difference in holding them back is whether they are 4 years old on the first day of kindergarten or 5 years old. It honestly depends on the child and how ready he/she is for school. I wasn't advocating daycare for a 6 year old!

Twingles had a good post about this a few months ago. K is more academic under common core so it's important to make sure your child is ready.

I had a 19 year old kid in senior class of HS when I went to HS with male pattern baldness starting. Little weird.

My last was born on January 4th and I missed cut off by four days. Which means I get to work one year longer, have child home one year longer and for a daughter not a plus as it makes her tallest kid in class.

If it was a son the height might be of some use in sports.

Nowdays less and less kids are graduating college in four years. Even if you graduate on time some majors that used to be four years like Accounting and Pharmacy are now five years. Which means interviewing "kids" 23 or 24 fresh out of college.

I read that among first-time, full-time undergraduate students who began seeking a bachelor’s degree at a 4-year degree-granting institution in fall 2006, the 6-year graduation rate was 57 percent at public institutions, 66 percent at private nonprofit institutions, and 32 percent at private for-profit institutions.

Which means if more and more "Kids" are taking six years to graduate colllege and they are staring School a year later it really puts them behind in their career. Entry level jobs you get into to work your way up the ladder used to take start at 21 and by the time you are 29 and getting engaged or newly married after 8 years of work you feel settled.

Start that process off at 24 hard to get far by 29..

The height can still help your child in sports even though that's not your intention. And you will be sending a more mature child to college. That extra year can be very enriching - now is a good time to introduce a second language if you haven't done so yet. Or a time consuming sport like ice skating.

What's awful about the extended college career is that they are taking out 6 years of student loans for a 4 year degree - 150% of the efficient cost. I have a niece who recently finished an undergrad accounting degree in 4 years even with a semester abroad. On the plus side, from an employer's point of view, a 4 year degree completed in 4 years does indicate a student who had their act together.

This red-shirting thing is getting ridiculous. My asian tiger parents did the complete opposite of red shirting me and put me in pre-K 1 year early. Not only that, I ended up skipping kindergarten because I already knew all the abc/123s. So being the youngest, smallest kid all the way through high school sucked for getting laid, but it was more than made up for once I hit med school. Chicks dig doctors. Just send your kid to school, they are not that special.

Also, although I was a runty asian kid, I still played 2 years of varsity football for the Great Neck South Rebels... not that great of an accomplishment since we sucked anyway, but it just shows there is no point in redshirting.
