A question for anyone who is receiving the Senior Citizens Exemption on their property taxes (this used to be called the "Aged" exemption by some towns, and/or the "Low-Income Senior" exemption by others).

(This is NOT the Enhanced STAR; this is the one whereby if you are 65 or older, and your income is less than $29,000, you receive the maximum of 50% reduction of your home's taxable assessed valuation.)

Question: Does this exemption reduce your assessed valuation for your SCHOOL taxes? I asked at the Smithtown tax assessor's office (I'm in the Hauppauge SD) and was told "it does not apply to anything you vote on, such as the library taxes". So I assumed that meant it does not reduce the assessed valuation for the school taxes either, since we vote on those. But when I looked at the NY State and the Suffolk County web pages about this program, they both say it "can apply to town, county, and school taxes" (although not to special district taxes). So the information I'm getting is conflicting, to say the least.

If you currently receive this exemption, does it apply to your school taxes? Which would mean that for instance if your "full" school tax amount on a hypothetical assessed valuation of $6000 is $5400, this exemption would reduce the home's assessed valuation for school tax purposes to $3000, and thus the school tax amount would also be cut in half: to $2700. Then the current Enhanced STAR amount $1300 is deducted from that (according to the NYS website that's how it works: the Enhanced STAR is deducted after anything else is adjusted), leaving a net school tax amount of $1400. Is that how it would work? Sounds a bit too good to be true.

Thanks!

Depends on the School District. What's yours? Are you on Long Island (Nassau or Suffolk)?

My earlier reply was for "enhanced STAR". If you're talking about Senior w/limited income, it is generally higher than I previously stated. But your question was too general - location matters!

So a senior citizen is able to enhanced STAR reduction by just applying for STAR?

No, there is a specific application for enhanced STAR. Eligibility is also income driven and will be verified via NYS tax returns. For 2018, it is $86,000 or less.

Eligibility in 2018 is based on income information from the 2016 tax year. Income means federal "adjusted gross income" minus the "taxable amount" of total distributions from IRAs (individual retirement accounts and individual retirement annuities).
