I just had an accessory apartment removed from my house in Town of Babylon and was told that the taxes don't get reduced until Dec. of 2016. Does this make sense that I have to keep paying the taxes for the apartment for almost 18 months even though I don't have it? The lady on the phone said it is a NYS law.
Does anybody know any way around this to get the money back for an apartment that doesn't exist or to get the town to change sooner?
I completely understand why there are so many illegal apartments in Long Island. Doesn't pay to do the right thing and do pay taxes.
I could understand that your 2015 taxes won't change but it seems like it won't take effect until 2017. Law or no law that's just a money grab unless the reverse is true - that your taxes don't go up for 18-24 months after adding taxable improvements to your house.
Maybe $400-900 a year. Not a whole lot but it still seems like quite a scam to me on the part of our local/state government. I bet if I put a pool in the back yard they would be quick to raise the taxes.
