Hi all, just wanted a pool of ideas from all of you that have pets (cats, dogs, etc) at home. Assuming that taking them along is not feasible, what do you guys do with them? I used to have cousins come housesit for me and watch them but that is also not feasible anymore. TIA

There are places that will board your pets... a "pet hotel."

I have used Petco on several occasions. It is very good, but it is not cheap. They are options.

There are also some private facilities. Pretty sure I saw one on Melville Road in Farmingdale (near Target). I have no experience with that location.

Check with your vet. Pets will need certain inoculations prior to boarding.

Hopefully, your pets are crate trained. At any boarding facility they will spend time in crates.

Besides having my neighbors kids take care of my dogs, Petco has been my best experience with boarding.

I have sent my dogs to pet hotels in the past where they dont get crated and were free to roam the facility with tons of other dogs, not sure if it was a good idea.

Many vets also offer boarding.

Ask friends and coworkers if they have any referrals. Many people do it privately in their homes but mostly it's word of mouth. I've had better experiences with that than at the vet. Too much time in the crates at the vet.

That seems unusual. Any place I have looked at crates the dogs for at least overnight. It would be a bad idea to leave a dog loose in a strange room overnight.

Petsmart website states $16-41 overnight per dog. (I misstated PetCo earlier - they don't do boarding). That's the basic rate - you add things on from there.

See: Petsmart Hotel Prices & Services | PetCarePricing.com

It can get expensive depending on the a al carte services you choose. Best bet is to visit a location, see the facility and ask questions.

Petsmart has a good service. If you can find someone to take your pets in, it will be much less expensive.

No idea on vet rates. I seem to remember the cost being higher than Petsmart. I would agree with Joanne teacher that (in general) a vet is a worse choice for boarding than Petsmart.

There are pet sitters who come to your home 1x-2x a day. They feed, water and exercise them as you request.

I've used Petsmart. No complaints. It isn't cheap, but its not really super expensive either.
