Have an electric dryer which just blew the circuit board. Could replace it for $148 but
unsure how old it is. But guessing within the last decade.

Gonna replace it the dryer.
We Have solar panels and natural gas. What's the best long term, gas or electric dryer? And what makes most efficient sense?

You're talking long term; if it were me, I'd replace it with a gas dryer.
Any new dryer is going to be more efficient than the one you currently have.

Even though he has solar? Why do you say gas over electric?

A gas appliance usually has less maintenance issues because less computer/electronic parts. Supposedly.

That's what us older folks were told in the past. Don't know how true that is anymore.

I would replace with an electric dryer and max out the solar. You paid a lot for that, so use it. It's also a renewable, whereas gas is a polluting fossil fuel.

Interesting problem.

I don't have solar but I have a gas dryer and gas range. Both appliances are less than 5 years old. I pay $19 - $20 per month in gas. Hopefully this helps with your calculations.

Let's see...$148 to fix a dryer or buying a new $500 dryer and hiring a plumber to install gas hook up. Hmmmmm....

A dryer that age may need a heating element replacement soon. Dryers are not that expensive to buy new.

The OP didn't mention if $148 was for the part or part and labor. I had a circuit board go in a washer and the repairman said it was good I had a service plan as the part alone was close to $200.

That's a good point about the hook up. OP didn't mention whether or not he had a gas hook up ready for the new dryer - that should be a consideration as well.
