Five years ago or so we decided to move to Long Island from another great island, Rhode Island (drumroll... cymbal crash). A job brought us here. So we asked many questions in this forum that helped us to get a better feeling of this area. Back then it helped us to choose a good place for our rental house when we didn't know anything at all about Long Island. And we think we chose well as we've been very happy these years here in Mineola.
But now that it seems we're going to stay here for a while it was time to buy and we're in the process of buying a house in East Northport (closing in the next days). Of course this time living on the island has helped a lot to narrow down the areas we liked in our house hunt, but this forum has helped a lot as well. From the school rankings that some people did out of the blue, to many comments about this or that town, village or hamlet (thanks to the deceased forum member that helped us understand those things) to those answering the direct questions we've had in this process. We even found our house inspector in this forum! So Thanks to all of you!
And although you know it, we know it, everybody knows it, you told us five years ago, I'd like to repeat it here: it is really really really necessary to live in the island for few years before buying. It's a very unique place. It really takes time to figure out yourself living in this or that area.
Soon, we'll be asking about new home-owners issues as you could imagine. Please bear with us :-) And we were owners before, but I think you don't pay here the $12 we paid our landscaping company back in Providence for mowing the lawn...
Congrats and enjoy the process of buying a house. Northport is a good place to live. I also lived in Mineola. Lived for 5 years on LI and brought a house on LI this year
