Did a whole house renovation a few years ago, Town of Hempstead. Work completed, got my CO, etc.

Three years later (today) I get a letter from the TOH Building Dept that there are two open permits on the property. One from 1930 when the house was built, the other from 1977 from when an extension was put on the original house.

The letter states that I must close these old permits by way of final inspection. But what would they even come to inspect? The work for which the permits were issued technically doesn't even exist anymore due to the drastic house renovation. Plus, I have a CO from the renovation which I would think supersedes the old open permits.

Anyone have experience with something like this?

On a separate note, what would trigger a letter like this? I have a few suspicions.

The CO from your recent renovation only covers the work completed at that time... It doesnt eliminate the need for a CO for any past work/initial build...

Who knows why. It is strange. Looks like they are reviewing files, maybe to see if an employee is screwing things up. These should have been picked up during your reno permits.

I would bite the bullet, call for a final inspection, explain the deal. If they find anything, explain that it would have much easier to address these issues during the reno , not 3 years later. If you get a reasonable inspector, you should be fine.

I would call them and explain that you have a whole CO due to the renovations that were recently done, sounds like a paperwork snafu, surprise surprise. It should be an issue. Honestly if you have a CO from a later date than those permits I wouldn't even worry about it.

Called this AM, I have to speak to the inspector who covers the area I'm in. Luckily he did the inspections and all the town work when we did the reno a few years ago, so he should be familiar.

Even the guy I spoke to this AM admitted an administrative snafu is probably the case here. We will see.

This is why I never file for permits! Never file nothing is ever open.
