Hello,

Every ten years I buy new car so now it's time for another car. But really don't want to deal with the sales person. I find most of them are pure evil. I remember last time sales person (Finance guy) will not take no for answer. He kept on giving me stories after stories why I should buy the extended warranty from him. Finally I gave in and bought I spend so much more money. complete waste of money.

Can you give few tips so I will not get screwed. I hear from other people it's so much fun buying car and they always get a good deal. I guess I am doing something wrong. I never got a good deal.

I definitely understand...I have a family member with the same concerns.

Best thing I ever did for him was to sign him up for a local credit union. They will negotiate for you! And you won't have to buy anything extra.

All the extras are pure profit.
Extended warranty, vin etching, and other add on accessories.
They will push and push for you to buy his crap, and use the Shell game to fool you into believing you’re getting a better deal because “the bank” likes to see ext warranties & vin etching and such and will lower your percentage rate. Be very careful.

Negotiate everything to the penny up front, before you get to the F&I clown.
Always get the rock bottom price on the vehicle before talking about a trade in if you have one. Lock in your rate before the trade in.
They play games with the percentage points to where if you are not sharp you have actually paid them for your trade in.

Do not appear desperate or excited.
Be firm.
Research the real going rate for the vehicle you want.
There are plenty of dealers, if you don’t get what you want keep shopping.

Negotiate sale price of vehicle first, before anything else.
Wear good boots because the bullpoop will get deep at the dealer.
Some of these ass clowns should be nominated for an Oscar with their performances.
They will lie to your face and pretend that they are on your side and looking out for your best interest.

Option #1 - buy through Costco. Decline anything "extra" than what's on the invoice for the car you buy.

Option #2 - buy through the dealer's "internet department". They will quote you a price which you can then take to another dealer's internet department without leaving your house.

Note that if you are financing (i.e. not paying cash), you can also line that up yourself - Credit Union, bank, whatever.

The trick is to do the transactions with as few human interactions as possible. And learn how to say "no".

Finally, never go in with a monthly payment in mind. They will play the "four squares" game with you and you will lose I caught a dealer on the south shore pulling that with my wife - the manager guy was jamming in $50 a month extra. I did some quick math, told him what I felt she should pay, and then said nothing more for 20 seconds while looking right at him. The manager then said "if we meet this price will you do the deal today?".

Exactly. Never give them a monthly payment budget.
Hence my negotiate the price first and foremost.
Before you sign and take delivery take a few minutes to read through all the paperwork. Thoroughly. This will annoy and frustrate the F&I guy but so what.
Don’t be intimidated by these thugs. They don’t think twice about sticking it to you so you should feel the same.

Also, I’m not advising you to go in all hostile and combative either.
Be nice and polite until you don’t have to be anymore.

I had luck contacting the internet department. One place gave me a price that no other internet dept. could match, and in searching sites like Edmunds, was up there with the better prices, so I took it without much fuss.

Don't be afraid to branch out to further distances...as in another state. I purchased cars in NJ which seems to have far better deals than NY. I know people who travel as far as 300+ miles for a car...so depends on your time & the amount of savings you can get.

Yup this. Internet sales will be honest with you. God I hate dealing with car salesmen. Even the well-kept one we bought from was sleazy - deceptive with vouchers that were no good and went back on his word. Never again.

watch the add-ons such as "preparation fee" . If you're considering an extended warranty there will be plenty of options coming in the mail when your original warranty expires. You don't have to make that decision for years.
