I recently added a dormer to my ranch style home. I went from 1098sqft to 2268sqft. The final inspection hasn't been completed yet and I noticed on the Nassau County Land Records website my assessment for 2020 went from 539 to 752 and fair market value from $215,600 to $300,800. I am wondering if these are the final numbers or is this still preliminary. The picture of my home on the land record website shows it under construction.

How do they figure out an assessment increase when the work is not completed....I called the assessment office and they said they will have an assessor call me back in a week or so; seems odd to me.

Also I know I have inquired in the past in regards to the 2020 assessment and when I would see the actual monetary increase in my taxes.

Thanks.

NYS loves it when you improve your house and they can jack up your taxes. Its counter incentive to do anything to your house because your taxes will go up. I knew a fellow whose exterior was a wreck to keep his taxes down.

Most likely based on what's on the permit application(s).

FYI, the Homestead exemption (phase-in of increase in taxes) generally applies only if living space increase does not exceed 50% of the previous living space.

I am ok with the current increase...I believe it is fair based on other homes in the area. I am concerned that it still will go up from here if they only based the assessment on my permits filed with the town.

It’s going to go up. You need to watch your assessment like a hawk.
And grieve every year.

300k for a 2200sf sounds pretty good in my opinion.

Just out of curiosity, what was the range for the dormer work?

New York State does not levy property taxes.

I was under the impression that the assessment is not applied until final inspection and C of C is issued. Its that way for Smithtown....
