I have a 1996 Ford Explorer... 4 wheel drive, V6 4 door.

I need to have a "new" combined city/highway fuel economy of 18 miles per gallon or less. I looked up on a site and it said 19 miles per gallon for my old explorer. Anyone know how it works?

I am missing out on the first time home buyer thing, i am going to be really unhappy if i miss out on this thing too!!!

Just keep in mind that you lose the trade-in value of the vehicle since they are going to scrap it. Weigh the trade-in value against the rebate.

yea but any car thats over 10 years old you are going to get pretty much nothing for a trade in anyway. consider the street value, but also consider how long it might take to sell it

Yeah 10yrs old is worthless, except for the very few and inbetween ... like a Viper and cars of that caliber.

But then think of the new payments vs maintenances, keeping that new vehicle to it's epa standards.
Keeping the old vehicle and making updates and improvements can be better sometimes in the long run....unless it's just rotted and dinged to death.

It only matters what the guv'ment says your car gets for miles per gallon. The guv'ment website also says our old dinosaur of a minivan gets 19 mpg. Trust me, it does not. But you know how smoothly things run when the guv'ment is in charge of them.

You also have to buy something that gets at least 10 mpg more than the clunker you are turning in (again according to the guv'ment).
