I saw some ads for home warranties. Basically, a service plan for all your applicances, including CAC, plumbing, heat, etc for $40 a month. Each service call includes a 35$ fee, but cost of labor and parts are free. Anyone use anything like this?
I have had a lot of experience with home warranties. Many agencies either give them away as sales incentives, or sell them. They can vary quite widely. Read the fine print carefully.
We had one in our house in Utah (an incentive from the seller like TomMoser says). It was nice...the swamp cooler and central air broke after 6 months and we only had to pay the service call fee).
seems kind of a waste to me personally... $480 a year at a minimum...
we get a service plan thru my oil company for the burner for about $50/ year, which includes the annual tuneup. up until a year or two ago, we were able to negotiate it for free.
i'd think it really wouldn't be worth it in the long run... over 10 years you are looking at almost $5,000... do you really think you'll have that much in appliance and heating/cooling repairs?
if you are somewhat handy, you could eliminate alot of the minor service calls... (ie. spring breaks on the dishwasher door - you can fix it for a lot less than a $35 service call)
also, find yourself a good appliance repairman.. i have a great guy i call... he doesn't b.s. you ... if it can't be fixed, or if it would make more sense to replace your appliance, he'll tell you straight up...
