The zoo and La Brea tar pits both come to mind, as well as Aquarium of the Pacific, and of course the beach.

Santa monica pier, some people say its ghetto compared to hungtington beach but it has more family things than muscles and bikinis.

Science center by downtown.

USC to check out colleges

chinatown, little tokyo

if you dont want to go into amusement parks, go to their downtown area. Downtown Disney is free to enter (parking is like 5 dollars) and its bascially disney without the rides.

i loved this place when i was a kid (Kidspace Children's Museum: Kidspace Children's Museum (http://www.kidspacemuseum.org/site/PageServer?pagename=index - broken link)).

i'm sure the little ones would also like to ride the trolley at the Grove and get some treats at the nearby Farmer's Market (3rd/Fairfax).

I also see lots of kids at the Griffith Park Observatory. Much of it is hands on and the show is very family friendly. The parents can also enjoy the city views from up there.

LA Brea Tar Pits, LA Childrens Museum(if it's still open), Queen Mary(maybe maybe not.. scary tour is fun, but kids may be too young to appreciate such a place)

Can you imagine being 6 years old though and literally being 100 steps away from Disneyland itself and not being able to go in? That's torture I would say! lol

There were some great suggestions above. I'll add a couple-
If your little kids are into cars, the Peterson Automotive Museum in the Miracle Mile close to the La Brea Tarpits is great. They even have an ongoing "Hot Wheels Hall of Fame" exhibit with life size cars, etc.

Depending on where you're staying it might be too far but the "Discovery Science Center" in Santa Ana is a great hands on interactive museum for kids.
