I just got a letter from my landlady and she wants to charge me $25 per month extra for my cat. How redicouls is this idea? If she is afraid of her crappy place to be ruined I would put an extra few hundred in deposit, but charge pet rent?

Is this notion is a common thing here in LA? I came from TX and this is unheard of. Just want to hear your opinions.

Unheard of here in Montreal. Some pet owners do not keep clean and ruin it for other pet owners. I guess the 25.00 extra rent is for possible wear and tear. It is exorbitant and I would contest it if you can. Ten dollars would be more like it or as you say a deposit to secure that you return the place in the same shape.
Even ten dollars would accrue over the year or years. Not right!

in the same shape you received would make sense. 25 bucks will accrue over the year or years and is unfair. I would contest it. They must have some sort of rental board or ombudsman for that?

It is common in San Francisco bay area. It was $50/mo for my 7 lb. dog in a small apartment in East Bay. I googled Dallas and saw quite a few apartments with pet rent so it must have at least hit the big cities there. (I own a house in Austin so I haven't checked here, but I bet it's here too).

I use to charge $25/monthly for pet rent for each cat, which is legal. I had a 2 cat limit. But there are so many responsible pet owners, I now charge $50.00 extra on the security deposit, with a 2-cat limit. I justify that it will cost $50.00 to have an exterminator spray for fleas, which I always do. If I have to change the carpet due to cat urine (which you can't get rid of unless you change the padding and carpet), then the cost of new carpet will be deducted from the security deposit. I've had to change the carpet about a half dozen times due to cat damage in 15 years.

Get rid of carpet. Who wants funky carpet anyway?! It traps everything...yuck. Put down flooring and renters can put down a rug.

Pet Rent? What has this world come to? I thought dog whisperers and doggie psychiatrists were odd already.

I'm in the Twin Cities in Minnesota & "Pet Rent" is becoming more & more common - often landlords are charging pet deposits & pet rent. Sad, but true.

An apt i saw in NJ was charging 50 bucks per pet. I have 2 cats. Can you imagine paying 100 bucks a month to own 2 cats???

I had to pay the same for two dogs in Va. and Ma. plus a hefty security deposit. Now I have four dogs.
