No idea where to start!

My job is primarily work from home, but about twice/month I will have to visit clients that could be all over LA. Right now I pay $875/month for rent on a 1 bdrm, and would like to keep it similar, up to $1000

There seems to be so many neighborhoods that I don't even know where to begin

Obviously safety is top of the list, along with a nearby park. I prefer it to be an area with young families or professionals.

Also - feel free to chime in with your experiences of what caught you off-guard when you moved to LA

Are you single or married? Do you have kids? Are you planning on having kids?

Do you want something by the beach or the Westside, or something more urban in Central LA?

Do you even want to livein the actual city of LA, or one of the many satellite cities that surround it?

Do you want to live in an apartment or a house with a yard?

One thing I will say is 875 a month for a one bedroom is incredibly low. Not sure you will find that outside of the Valley or South LA. Where in Brooklyn did you have such a low rent payment?

Married, but my husband likely won't have a job when we make the move, and I don't want to struggle to get by until he does. No kids

Definitely an apartment. I don't care for the upkeep a yard requires

Right now I live in a 400 sq ft Sunset Park apt, in Brooklyn's Chinatown. I sure do miss being able to make small talk with neighbors and store clerks. I'm hoping to go someplace with less of a language barrier, at least 30% English speakers.

I will look into the Valley and South LA. What are the main differences between the two?

I guess there is more stuff in Central LA than I thought. If you want to live more in the middle of things, areas like Koreatown and East Hollywood have stuff under 900. That will be less of a transition from Brooklyn most likely.

The Valley is more suburban (basically just an annexed suburb of LA), it is hotter and drier than the rest of the city. There are good areas and bad areas.

South LA is traditionally the poorer part of LA but definitely has lots of nice pockets. A little more urban than the Valley but still pretty car-oriented... Probably the language barrier will be too high (lots of Spanish speakers) so you can probably count this area out.

Interesting I wouldn't think of South L.A being Spanish Speaking really...There are a lot of neighborhoods in the valley where Spanish is the main language...but I'm sure South L.A has gotten a lot more Hispanic over the years. What are the nice pockets of South L.A?

East Hollywood or Koreatown are pretty cool...prob not some of the safest parts of town but there is a lot to do and you are near a lot of other cool areas.
