The best place? I hear Malibu's nice.

Craigslist is often citied as a good guide for rental prices. Try working that. But you'd need to know where you are going to work first.

Here's the link for Craig's list craigslist: los angeles classifieds for jobs, apartments, personals, for sale, services, community, and events You can also find a job through the site as well.

I'm also scouting the areas by foot, craigslist is a great place to start but don't hold all your faith there. Hit the pavement. Typical rent for a studio can vary, but I find around $750-$1000. Good luck!
PS- VISIT FIRST!!!...A FEW TIMES!

It depends on what your skills and work experience are. Are you trained to do anything? Do you have a degree? Or will you be working a job that I could train a monkey to do, like a job at Target or Starbucks? People with highly paid marketable skills make a good living. Those that don't, don't.
