Moving to NoHo here in the next few months. Any eyes-on locals have a feel for the walkup market there on the strips (those small little studios/1+1's you see over the mom and pop stores..)? Are there usually a few open within a few blocks of the district center? What do they go for (round figure... my guess is about $800-$1200 for a 1 BR or smaller)?

Any unsolicited advice is also welcome, lol... never lived there...

Hi Buck, what part of NoHo are you eyeing to live? Lankershim Blvd? Magnolia Blvd? Cahuenga Blvd? Burbank Blvd? Those are the main arteries of NoHo with shopping. I assume you mean those businesses with a single apartment up top. If you can give a nearby intersection, that will help. I know the owner of Assam Indian cafe and they live above their restaurant. That's the only way they can make being open 24 hours a day work.

Sorry, I guess I could have been more specific... yeah, Lankershim or Vineland... there crossing with Magnolia or Chandler (yay Metro!!!). And what you describe is EXACTLY what I'm looking for - too bad the owners live there!!!

I live in one of the larger apt complexes in the area which comes with its perks (gym, underground parking, streamlined issue control process, ect). I also get the appeal of the small more private/intimate apartments above some of the older retail in the area. You get more of the classic charm, you have fewer neighbors and you're a hop skip and a jump (literally) from the cafes. When I looked for apartments, those ones you speak of are far and few between. Granted, I didn't look for them specifically, but I personally haven't seen a "For Rent" sign on the 2nd floor of those commercial buildings. Maybe, if I did, I might have thought it was to rent the retail space and I didn't give it another thought. I'd say the price range you guesstimated is in the right ball park.
