I knew he traveled a lot but he's been out-of-state about 45% of the time in 2014.
165 days out of Louisiana for one year seems a bit much, but then again...one can never
campaign too early if one plans to seek a party nomination.

I don't see where this is such a big deal.

With modern satellite telecommunications, he could spend 90% of his time in his tahiti beach house, and still have firm reins on the ship of state. He could sign appointments, bills and orders electronically from a distance.


One of the candidates for mayor in Pittsburgh a few years ago lives in Jerusalem. There were other problems with Mr. Wander, but his location wasn't one of them.

Well I don't disagree that modern communications makes telecommuting a reality. But in my experience concerning politics and governance... there's no better method than face-to-face. You lose a lot of subjective communication at a distance, by memo, Skype, phone, etc. Any skilled negotiator or successful salesperson will tell you there's simply no substitute for getting out in front of your customers, your opponents, or constituents. And governance is a sales job if nothing else. Considering the fiscal mess our state is in, I'd think Jindal's absence has played more than a bit of a role in what we're dealing with today.

Whether military, politics or church: Leadership comes from the front and in sight of those whom you would expect to follow your lead. Anything else is superficial at least and ineffective at worst. Besides...if you "hired" (read: Elected) a politician to "work" for you (the state)...you'd want them to be accessible...meaning holding office hours. Jindal could've easily outsourced his job to Calcutta considering how much time he's spent at home. We need someone committed to serving the state...not themselves and his actions indicates what his true focus is placed.

What's next? Avatar politicians? That would be a nightmare.

Gov. Jindal is out of office at the end of the current year, if Louisiana voters didn't care for Jindal's frequent trips out of state, it should be something they ask of the current candidates for the office.
