You actually have to leave town to get treated for certain conditions. When you think of it, that makes sense. Medical providers make a lot more $ in larger cities. Lafayette has all the medical care anyone needs.

Lafayette has more competition in shopping, because it's larger. If you don't like the price of something somewhere, you have more options to try to find it for cheaper.

But I don't think it's an either-or comparison. They're different. One is larger, one is smaller.

As for the casinos in L.C., those provide jobs, but they're low paying jobs. Lafayette is more music oriented and livelier, and somewhat more French, though both have a lot of French descendents. Both also have hurricanes & flooding!
I agree about medical care. Many of my coworkers in LC have to travel to Houston to see the best doctors for specialization, surgeries or other procedures. The ones in LC are not nearly as good. Its like they are middle tier, the types of doctors that use their current experience as a "stepping stone" for a better job.

Disagree on that, the reason people are traveling to Houston is because of the marketing efforts of the cancer centers in Houston. Lake Area Medical Center has many qualified specialty physicians that while not explicitly disclosed, are often consulted by doctors at MD Anderson for opinions on care.

Yet what people do not disclose is that those cancer centers in Houston make most of their money with testing procedures like (MRI, blood work, Xrays and other diagnostics). The cancer centers in Houston will also often not recognize the tests already performed on patients by medical offices in Lake Charles. Many examples exist of this behavior but we cannot pursue a public discussion about it due to HIPAA laws.

Some questions:
1) What's the live music scene like? Is it all Cajun/Zydeco, or is there more variety? And where does the music take place (meaning downtown? uptown? etc.)?
2) If anyone's in the APA, how do you guys like it? I'm a low-level player, and I'd like to continue shooting pool if I can...
3) How's biking around here? I don't have a car, and I've heard that public transportation is ****. Got to get around somehow...
4) What's the dating scene like? I'm a black woman who's open to all races; is that a common thing in Lafayette, or what?
5) What neighborhoods/areas are best to live in? I'd like to get an inexpensive studio/efficiency, if possible, maybe something close to campus.

And finally...
6) Would you suggest moving here? Seems that LA is in the beginning/midst of an economic downturn. Will that be a problem? (I know that education is taking a big hit, but according to the department I interviewed for, although they'll not be offering the fellowship that I'm up for after this year, whoever gets it this year will be guaranteed funding for the next 4 years.)

Thanks for any replies!
1. variety of music.
2. Not sure, don't play anymore. My cousin, Betsy, still plays and competes. Got a few trophies.
3. If you live on or near campus you can get by on bicycle. Nearest grocery store is in the Oil Center, a small shopping district. Night clubs and downtown areas are all easy bicycle ride away. If you want to go to the nearest shopping mall or major shopping centers from the campus you can take the city bus service but after a certain hour it's service is severely limited. I'll find the link to their service and post it here for you. You can ride a bicycle from campus down Johnston St to the mall but it can be dangerous in some areas. Parts of this road have bicycle lanes, but not all.
4. Life here is not like you see portrayed in stereo typical Hollywood movies and TV shows that generally show everyone in the south as racist, stupid, ignorant, inbred back woods type people. I've been in at least 8 states and 20 countries. There are these types of people everywhere, not just "the south".
5. There are apartment complexes going up in and around campus. Plenty to choose from now than in the past.
6. Depends on your major, job opportunities, and whether you like the area.

Some good things about the campus. The UL campus is close to the largest hospital in the area, Lafayette General. It's also close to Girard Park, a park with jogging/walking paths, playground for children, seasonal swimming pool, rec center (indoor basketball, weight room, activities), outdoor basketball, tennis courts, and festivals. Some UL students engage in LARPing (live action roll playing)at the park as well as disc golf. Practically across the street from the campus are some night clubs. More upscale clubs are downtown. Also practically across the street from the campus is a locally owned pizza place, usual fast food chain restaurants, and a convenience store. The Oil Center has some nice stores and locally owned restaurants. There are plenty of festivals in and around Lafayette. All festivals include music and food.

Bus service website Lafayette Transit System
Lafayette Parks and Recreation Parks and Recreation
A bike ride away from the campus is the Greyhound bus station, Amtrak station, and the airport.

I'm thinking of moving to Louisiana after I graduate nursing school ( I just started so I have a year to go but I am a CNA). I currently live in northern Minnesota and I'm so tired of the bitter cold. Plus I suffer from dry eyes and my eye doctor suggested someplace with higher humidity. I can't decide between Baton Rouge or Lafayette. I'm 48, SF, don't care much for the bar scene, and would like to live on the outskirts of either city so that I'm not on top of a neighbor but I do have them close enough if in need of help. Any advice? Thanks!

There's about 12 other states that fit that bill.

Agreed.

This young Mormon missionary from Utah did his mission in Acadiana. He said the favorite part of his mission was the food (and the people):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BqYAQUBiKBk.

He says he had to get seasoning from his friends when he got back home because he missed the food so much. He says that food is how people "talk to each other" when they get together in Louisiana. "The people are just awesome"... "I've met so many wonderful people."

Louisiana isnt about city life or the best amenities, its sbout the culture. the people. Its not a nice PLACE. Its a great COMMUNITY. Thats why we love it. There are nicer places, but you cant replace the people and the cultural pride and uniqueness of Louisiana people!
