I agree about medical care. Many of my coworkers in LC have to travel to Houston to see the best doctors for specialization, surgeries or other procedures. The ones in LC are not nearly as good. Its like they are middle tier, the types of doctors that use their current experience as a "stepping stone" for a better job.

Disagree on that, the reason people are traveling to Houston is because of the marketing efforts of the cancer centers in Houston. Lake Area Medical Center has many qualified specialty physicians that while not explicitly disclosed, are often consulted by doctors at MD Anderson for opinions on care.
Yet what people do not disclose is that those cancer centers in Houston make most of their money with testing procedures like (MRI, blood work, Xrays and other diagnostics). The cancer centers in Houston will also often not recognize the tests already performed on patients by medical offices in Lake Charles. Many examples exist of this behavior but we cannot pursue a public discussion about it due to HIPAA laws.

4. Life here is not like you see portrayed in stereo typical Hollywood movies and TV shows that generally show everyone in the south as racist, stupid, ignorant, inbred back woods type people. I've been in at least 8 states and 20 countries. There are these types of people everywhere, not just "the south".
5. There are apartment complexes going up in and around campus. Plenty to choose from now than in the past.
6. Depends on your major, job opportunities, and whether you like the area.
Some good things about the campus. The UL campus is close to the largest hospital in the area, Lafayette General. It's also close to Girard Park, a park with jogging/walking paths, playground for children, seasonal swimming pool, rec center (indoor basketball, weight room, activities), outdoor basketball, tennis courts, and festivals. Some UL students engage in LARPing (live action roll playing)at the park as well as disc golf. Practically across the street from the campus are some night clubs. More upscale clubs are downtown. Also practically across the street from the campus is a locally owned pizza place, usual fast food chain restaurants, and a convenience store. The Oil Center has some nice stores and locally owned restaurants. There are plenty of festivals in and around Lafayette. All festivals include music and food.

I'm thinking of moving to Louisiana after I graduate nursing school ( I just started so I have a year to go but I am a CNA). I currently live in northern Minnesota and I'm so tired of the bitter cold. Plus I suffer from dry eyes and my eye doctor suggested someplace with higher humidity. I can't decide between Baton Rouge or Lafayette. I'm 48, SF, don't care much for the bar scene, and would like to live on the outskirts of either city so that I'm not on top of a neighbor but I do have them close enough if in need of help. Any advice? Thanks!

Louisiana isnt about city life or the best amenities, its sbout the culture. the people. Its not a nice PLACE. Its a great COMMUNITY. Thats why we love it. There are nicer places, but you cant replace the people and the cultural pride and uniqueness of Louisiana people!
