A nearly $3 million pedestrian bridge being built near Mercer University will soon cause a few traffic problems starting next week.
Brenda White has lived in Macon all her life and the past six years in Tindall Heights, just off Mercer University Drive.
"A lot of traffic. Mercer is a real busy highway> I call it a highway, but it's really a street," White said.
She never has to drive on it. She takes the Macon Transit bus where she has to go.
"All I have to do is get on the bus, pay my fare, and travel," White said.
But construction of a new pedestrian bridge could cause a lot of delays for people who normally use Mercer University Drive, near the Mercer campus. Clay Murphey, the Macon-Bibb SPLOST coordinator, says it'll link the campus with new developments like lofts, a hotel, restaurants, and the Tindall Heights neighborhood.
"Anybody and everybody that wants to come across and use the bridge, it will have elevator access, great stairs coming down, and it will be open to the public 24/7," Murphey said.
He says it will be just the beginning for development on that side of town.
"As development inches this way, it'll spur development. On the other side of the interstate, you have got two empty corners that would be great for commercial development," Murphey said.
