I am a young mom (married), considering grad school at UW Madison. I am going for my doctorate to become an English professor, so I will be there for some time. My family and I have wanted to escape Illinois since the day we moved here, so I thought, Madison seems like a great place to spend the next 8+ years! Or even longer if I teach there...Anyhow, I can only tell so much from short visits, demographics research, etc.

My biggest question is whether Madison is friendly to young families. I know we should probably avoid the "undergrad ghetto" as I've heard it called, but I've heard good things about the near east side (I want to live close to downtown and use public transpo/bike). I hope to meet other young families, have easy access to parks, shops, and healthy food. Are these things achievable?

I live in Chicagoland now and compared to the average family here we are way younger, way poorer, and way cooler. We're being snobbed out of town. Where are the people like us?

I think Madison is family friendly every major event usually has a children's section/activities. It sounds like the near east side would be a good fit for you. Good luck in your move!

You might also want to look at Eagle Heights, which is university-owned apartments specifically set up for grad students and families. I didn't live there when I was in grad school but if I'd had children it would have been VERY attractive. I know they have childcare right there, and the common yard areas are very well kept. Tons of families, mostly in the same age/financial/general lifestyle situation.

Thanks for the encouraging info.

I looked into Eagle Heights but they don't allow kitties! I do love how many child care options are close to campus though, and it would be nice to not have to go out of the way. I found a university operated pre-school called Bernie's Place. It's in a little house and they serve vegetarian lunches. It just blows my mind to find stuff like that!

We've decided we are going to rent for a year once we move, to get used to the neighborhoods before we buy in Madison. We own a home now, so hopefully the market recovers in the next year so we can sell and get out!
