The Sardine is being celebrated in the State of Maine. Here's a link to an article on some upcoming celebratory & informational events on the Sardine's history in Maine:

The Herald Gazette: Sing a song of herring

Anyone remember this sign? Or know where it was?

It's the sign in front of the old Stinson's plant. My husband grew up a quarter mile from there. His family still fishes out of Prospect Harbor. It was owned by the Stinson family but is now owned by Bumble Bee.

Irony - Year of the Sardine the year the last sardine plant closed. Ouch.

The so proclaimed, "Year of the Sardine" is directly in response to the closing of Stinson's, the last operating sardine plant in the State of Maine. The individual's who came up with the idea, as well as the organizations who joined with them to, and I loosely paraphrase the Village Soup article, document & celebrate the history of the sardine fishery in Maine, surely do not intend to mock the significance of this moment in Maine's sardine history.

I wouldn't have made the initial post had I thought the intentions of the group were less than considerate of the fishery.

I don't think it was the intent of the group to be inconsiderate nor was yours. It just strikes as odd that the Feds and State environmental groups decided that fish entrails were to be considered pollution and now the hippy artists come out and want to sing a write and think it will make an impact. It's a nice sentiment but won't do a bloody thing, in my mind, to change a thing.

Personally, I get both a charge and aggravated at folks **** the two mentioned that think what they plan will make a difference. Akin to that Oprah "closure" stuff that I consider bovine defication.

Sorry to be a creature of scandanavian folklore here and I hope you take it with a grain of salt.

I think they should sing a song about McJobs since there is little other than that up here now.

I just kissed two Maine native BFFs goodbye when they left the state last night. Why? Because they couldn't afford to live and raise their kids up here anymore. They tried, but the job he was doing couldn't pay the mortgage and the commute was a killer. The house stands empty and up for sale now.

He lost his living-wage job with Beneficial Mortgage after the taxpayers bailed out AIG. As a token of appreciation for that apparently, they decided to close all of their US offices (Beneficial being a subsidiary of AIG).

It is what it is.

Um, they were bailed out under Bush.

There are many years of bad policy from both parties that have resulted in places like Stinson closing.

To me, singing songs isn't doing enough.

Not the second time! I agree Bush was a terrible President too but two wrongs as they say.....
I agree about the futility of singing songs to keep business open..
